  1. AERIAL LIFTS

  2. Introduction • This program is designed to familiarize workers with the safe use of aerial work platforms. This is a generic safety program and does not eliminate the need for proper training on the equipment • OSHA requires that ALL persons be trained in the proper operation and safety of any aerial lift device PRIOR to operating

  3. Objectives • Safe procedures for working on platforms • Safe procedures for using powered platforms • Inspection procedures • Operation procedures • Fall arrest systems

  4. Aerial Lifts Purpose: Lifts are a better way to reach overhead areas and are safer than ladders. However, there are safety precautions that must be followed

  5. Work platform is to be used by trained and authorized operators only It is the operators responsibility to: • Read and understand all caution and danger warnings and operating manual • Perform daily maintenance inspection • Have all worn or damaged parts replaced • Fasten entry gate/chain/bar • Use work platform only on hard level surfaces

  6. Inspect and/or Test the Following Daily or at the Beginning of Each Shift • Operating and emergency controls • Safety devices • Personal protective devices • Tires and wheels • Air, hydraulic and fuel system for leaks • Loose or missing parts • Cable and wiring harness • Placards, warnings, control markings and operating manual • Guardrail system • Battery fluid level • Hydraulic reservoir level • Coolant level

  7. Fall Protection for Scissor Lifts • Scissors Lifts (SKYJACK Mobile Elevating Work Platform) • Fall protection is not necessary or required unless the railing has been removed

  8. Fall Protection for Aerial Lifts • Aerial Lifts (articulating & telescoping boom lifts) • Articulating aerial lifts, which have a hinged boom, require additional fall protection due to the potential of being bounced out of the bucket • Telescoping aerial lifts, that only go straight up and down, do not require additional fall protection

  9. Fall Arrest Systems • Fall arrest systems include: • Full-body harness • Lanyards • Rope grabs • Lifelines • Lifeline anchorage points • Riggings

Fall Arrest Systems • Know the application limits of the system being used (see manufacturer recommendations) • Proper anchoring and tie-off techniques • Never attach yourself to unstable anchors • Deceleration distance and elongation of lanyards • Make sure that the lanyard is not too long (include stretch distance)

Tip-Over Hazards • Do not drive near drop-offs, holes, or loading docks • Do not raise platform on uneven or soft surfaces • Do not drive onto uneven or soft surfaces when elevated • Do not raise platform on slope or drive onto slope when elevated • Do not raise platform in windy or gusty conditions • Standing on railing to reach work area rather than repositioning the lift • Traveling to job location with lift in elevated position • Using lift with railing removed • Using lift on uneven or sloped surface • Using near power lines, junction boxes, etc. • Battery charging

  12. Electrocution Hazard • This machine is not insulated • Maintain safe clearances from electrical power lines and apparatus • You must allow for platform sway, rock, or sag • This work platform does not provide protection from contact with or proximity to an electrically charged conductor

  13. Other Hazards • Do not overload • Do not use without railings and entry gate in place • Do not use if work platform is not working or parts are damaged • Do not use near moving vehicles • Do not stand or sit on guardrails • Do not use under the influence of alcohol or drugs • Do not override safety devices • Do not leave unattended with key in switch (greater than 25-ft. away or out of sight) • Do not use ladder or other device to increase size or working height • Do not use with improperly inflated tires • Do not use with damaged wheels or tires

  14. Battery Changing and Charging • Keep flames and sparks away. DO NOT smoke near batteries • Wear protective apron, gloves, and goggles when working with batteries • Make sure that a properly functioning eyewash and safety shower are positioned near the charging area. Immediately flush eyes with cold water if electrolytic acid is splattered into them • Turn Emergency Power Disconnect Switch to “OFF” • Connect charger AC plug to proper voltage source • Charge batteries. DO NOT leave charger unattended for more than two consecutive days. Severe overcharging and battery damage may result if charger fails to turn off • Disconnect charger from power source • Normal charging will take 10-14 hours

  15. Maintenance • Before attempting any repair work, disconnect battery ground negative (-) lead • Properly position safety bar if the scissors assembly is raised DANGER Do not reach through scissors assembly without safety bar properly positioned. • Preventative maintenance is the easiest and least expensive type of maintenance
