  1. Warm-up for 09.01.11 What might this map have to do with the eventual decline of Spanish missions in GA?

  2. Reasons for the Decline of Spanish Missions in GA

  3. Reasons for the Decline of Spanish Missions in GA • The British Presence • British attack missions • British defeated the Spanish Armada in 1588. England rules the seas, and much of Spanish fleet destroyed. • British set up Charles Town (Charleston) in 1670 – beginning of the Carolina Colony • British established trade routes with local Indian tribes and offered weapons and riches to those who would attack the Spanish • British openly encouraged pirates to attack and raid Spanish missions

  4. Reasons for the Decline of Spanish Missions in GA • II. Georgia’s Native Americans • Led occasional uprisings against the Spanish • Many moved further inland to get away from the missions’ control • Massive population decrease due to diseases brought by Europeans • THESE THINGS LEAD THE SPANISH TO WONDER… • “IS IT EVEN WORTH IT?”

  5. REASONS FOR EUROPEAN EXPLORATION On the back of the map you were just given, brainstorm a list of reasons why Europeans (including Spain) wanted to explore and colonize the New World.

  6. ANSWERS: • More direct route to Asia  Northwest passage • Increasing opportunities for trade • Wealth - gold, silver and spices • Spreading the Christian Religion • Increased Power and prestige in Europe • Building European Empires

  7. Countries in yellow box must be present on your map

  8. WhYwHaTHe/ShEdId Is ImPoRtAnTtOGa, (NaTiOn, &/oRWoRLd): • De Soto = the first European to explore Georgia • His written records (and those of his men) ended the period of Prehistory in GA • His expedition led to the deaths of thousands of natives in GA due not only to violence BUT MAINLY due to DISEASES the Europeans spread to the Indians. • His expedition in GA was a failure for Spain because he did not find any gold or riches (he didn’t find any anywhere else on his trip either)
