Biography • She was born April 28, 1926 in Monroeville, Alabama. • She was the youngest of four children. • Amasa Coleman and Frances Finch Lee were her parents. • Lee went to Huntingdon College from 1944-45, then studied law at the University of Alabama from 1945-49, then attended one year at Oxford University.

  3. History of the Time • The Scottsboro Trials happened during 1930. • The Scottsboro Trials are a group of trials involving rape between two white women and nine black men began. • All black defendants were almost decided guilty without proper trial. • The jury was made up of all white people who ignored all evidence in favor of the blacks. • Though the women had not been raped all men but one were sentenced as guilty.

  4. Lee used many people and events that happened in her life and included them in her book. Harper somewhat portrays herself as Scout, a rowdy, contentious, young girl. Lee also includes Truman Capote a friend from her childhood which is referred to as “Dill.” Influences from her Life

Truman Capote • When he was four his parents divorced and sent him to Monroeville, Alabama. • Capote was Harper’s next door neighbor from 1928-1933. • Many rumors that Truman created or helped Harper create To Kill a Mockingbird. • In the end Truman wrote a letter saying he did not help Harper Lee write her award winning book.

  7. To Kill a Mockingbird • It was Lee’s first and only novel that was published. • The book was published in 1960 and was shortly created into a successful movie in 1962. • It was intended to show the sense and opinion of small towns in the South.

  8. Awards • Lee won the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 for the book To Kill A Mocking Bird. • She sold approximately fifteen million copies. • Lee was named to the National Council of Arts in June 1966 by President Johnson.
