  1. Sentence or Sentence Fragment?

  2. Watch the following video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdUXxdmhIsw According to the video, what is a subject? What is a predicate?

  3. What is a sentence? • A group of words that contains a subject and a verb and that expresses a complete thought. • Examples: • Octavio Paz won a Nobel Prize in literature. [Underline the subject and circle the verb] • Stop. [The understood subject is you, and the verb is stop.] • Do you collect coins? [Underline the subject and circle the verb.] • I actually rode on an elephant! [Underline the subject and circle the verb.]

  4. What is a sentence fragment? • A group of words that looks like a sentence but either does not contain both a subject and a verb, or it does not express a complete thought. • Examples: • Visited an old museum. [What is missing?] • Alonzo’s sisters and brothers. [What is missing?] • As I walked to school. [What is missing?]

  5. Tip: • Donot begin a sentence with a coordinating conjunction (and, or, but, yet, so, for) to avoid writing sentence fragments. These words should be used for joining words or clauses. • Example: • And rode her bike to the store [What is missing?] • But did not have his homework. [What is missing?]
