  6. Naming Organisms • Use the genus and the species name for the scientific name – binomial nomenclature (2 name naming). • Humans = Homo sapiens • Blue whale = Balaenoptera musculus • Great white shark = Carcharodon carcharias

  8. Kingdom Monera • AKA - bacteria • Single-celled • Prokaryotic • Autotrophic or Heterotrophic • Cell wall • Asexual reproduction • May be able to move

  10. Kingdom Protista • Eukaryotic • Single or multicellular (mostly single) • Autotrophic or heterotrophic • The protist kingdom is like a grab bag or junk drawer. • Includes amoeba, euglena, paramecium, algae, seaweed, etc.

  12. Kingdom Fungi • Eukaryotic • Single-celled (yeasts). Most are multicellular (mushrooms on pizza) • Saprophytic (heterotrophs that absorb nutrients from dead or dying tissue) • Sexual or asexual reproduction • No fungi in the oceans – can’t take the salt

  20. Domain Archaebacteria • “Architects of the Atmosphere” • Earliest life forms with fossil 3.5 billion years old • Autotrophic • Extreme acidophiles, halophiles, and methanogens.

  21. Domain Eubacteria Includes all the bacteria that are not archaebacteria. Not photosynthetic – decomposers and disease-causing

  22. Domain Eukarya • Includes the other 4 kingdoms • Protista • Fungi • Plantae • Animalia

  23. What will be the next change(s)? • Will protists be moved into the other kingdoms? • Will viruses be considered alive and moved into their own kingdom or domain?
