  8. Amplify the ripples by having a great party . .. • Send out invitations. Unlike PCR, most scientists are not as eager to undertake educational reform • Let them eat cake..incentivize and encourage your administration to reward teacher scholars. Amplifying the ripples: Disseminating your educational project to a larger audience, Herrera--2012

  9. Amplify the ripples by having a great party . .. • Let others take ownership (let them adapt the macarena). • Give up some control of the idea. http://torontoist.com/2012/06/ http://www.lostinidaho.me/2011/08/mexican-food-wisconsin-and-macarena.html Amplifying the ripples: Disseminating your educational project to a larger audience, Herrera--2012

  10. Amplify the ripples by having a great party . .. • Examine your results rigorously and empirically (like the scientist you are!) and publish truthfully. • Be willing to sing the praises of those who are willing to convert or at least feign conversion. Amplifying the ripples: Disseminating your educational project to a larger audience, Herrera--2012

  11. Amplify the ripples by having a great party . .. • Use contemporary dissemination strategies appropriate for the target audience. • e.g., be systematic about your dissemination approaches. • Construct table with the following . . . • Purpose of dissemination • Target groups • Method of dissemination • Tasks involved in dissemination • Timing of the dissemination strategy • Who is responsible for the tasks Amplifying the ripples: Disseminating your educational project to a larger audience, Herrera--2012

  12. Amplify the ripples by having a great party . .. 8. Focus on similar institutional cousins Amplifying the ripples: Disseminating your educational project to a larger audience, Herrera--2012

  13. Amplify the ripples by having a great party . .. • 9. Be open to collaborating locally and regionally • Use your scientific societies and your affiliation with professional organizations. 14. Expanding the idea is about convincing others that the effort is a worthwhile undertaking. Practically speaking: • If its “transformative,” ask for funding (NSF TUES program). • Plug into a community of practice—STEP central website • Continuously assess efficacy of intervention Amplifying the ripples: Disseminating your educational project to a larger audience, Herrera--2012

  15. Expanding the idea is about convincing others that the effort is a worthwhile undertaking. Practically speaking: • Tell anyone willing to listen • Convince others to try it ONCE • Incentivize the effort with help of administration • Find champions at other institutions. • Try using Google ad words to find what has been searched: https://adwords.google.com Amplifying the ripples: Disseminating your educational project to a larger audience, Herrera--2012

  16. Observations based on lessons learned and group activities • The most popular idea is not necessarily the “best” idea. • The most charismatic proponent influences the dynamic of ripples • Great ideas are sometimes subsumed and diluted Amplifying the ripples: Disseminating your educational project to a larger audience, Herrera--2012

  17. Observations based on lessons learned and group activities • The most propagated educational ideas are usually those that involve less work and are simple to understand and institute. • Sometimes money talks but some folks are motivated by other things like time, recognition [fame?], the greater good. Amplifying the ripples: Disseminating your educational project to a larger audience, Herrera--2012

  18. Observations based on lessons learned and group activities • It is hard to relinquish control of your idea • Idea dynamics are interesting and volatile---always use student learning as your beacon and your bacon. • Educational ideas that require change need “pulsing” and “pressing.“ • Sometimes with administrators and/or grassroots faculty, and more frequently, students (e.g. Student Initiated Courses). • If at first you don’t succeed…keep pressing. • STEP CENTRAL website: http://stepcentral.net/ …A clearinghouse of good information about dissemination and communities of practice.
