  3. So Why Blog? • Keep in touch • New placement areas • Increase in numbers • Shared learning • Reflective practice • Used examples in teaching sessions

  6. Rules/Guidelines And Concerns Discussed in Class but did not labour the point in an attempt to allow creativity. Specified anonymity and confidentiality. Any concerns were dealt with directly as the blogs were read or in one case the students problems were resolved using the blog

  8. What did students blog? I’ve also found that stickers are a great help in gaining some trust back (and getting some smiles) after the procedure has been done, remembering not to forget that the teddy bears need stickers too. For me placement started the night before, not being able to sleep till 0130 was very frustrating as i had a 0530 start, fantastic. I was so nervous it was unreal, but if I'm quite honest i haven't got a clue why as when i got there i was greeted by my lovely mentor and instantly i was fine! so far I have had coco pops on my trousers, pasta on my top and just yesterday weetabix in my hair! This is a great place for a placement and whoever gets to go next is really in for a great experience! This has made me a lot more aware of different ways of communicating with children, managing behaviour and how this may relate to their conditions When I went over however they told me to gown up and get ready to carry out chest compressions on the patient, which I didn’t want to do but felt to scared to speak up. (the staff nurse said)“are you a nurse or not, get over there and do it” which made me feel like I was wasting my time wanting to be a nurse. Through improving my observation and assessment skills I feel I have learnt a lot about the importance of family centred care and the impact that the right kind of support can have. While on placement I have become more confident with carrying out my own observations and improving communication skills with patients, parents and also the a&e staff.

Students Comments • Good to read learning experiences. • How others experiences compared to mine. • How others handled similar situations. • To see if they had other ideas which could be utilised in my own practice • What I can expect when I go to other placements. • That you were not alone in some of the issues and feelings • How much people enjoyed certain placements which made you feel at ease for next placement if you were in the same place.

Students Comments • Different experiences how situations were dealt with and what I might do if I’m ever in the same situation. • What others were achieving which gave me a drive to also achieve? • I felt it was a good way to reflect on my strengths and weaknesses whilst on placement and to let others know about my experiences. • I learnt that I am looking forward to trying as many different things as possible.

  15. Students Comments • I read a couple but not everyone’s as they were too long. • To be honest I read them to get an idea about what sort of things to write for my own blog. • It was quite fun reading everyone else’s “stories”

What We Havelearnt? • Most students engaged with the process • Most students say they understand the benefits of blogging • Most students reported that reading other blogs helped to prepare them for future placements • A more professional approach noted in second blog • A third blog a step too far?

  18. To Blog or not to Blog? The future Students will continue to blog in their next placement as yet we are undecided whether or not to give them a focus or a free reign. Blogs encourage reflective practice. The Blogs could form art of their professional portfolios.
