  1. From RC to DB: Using CORCand SiteSearch to Create theDigital Asia Library Charles W. Dean Library Technology Group UW-Madison cdean@facstaff.wisc.edu SSUGM, OCLC, May 8, 2001

  2. http://digitalasia.library.wisc.edu • DoE grant, 3 years, renewed annually • multi-institutional participation/support (UWisc., UMinn., Ohio State) • supports research in social sciences • enhances access to foreign information: Web sites in Asia in English/vernacular • dynamic subject guide (pathfinders, current awareness, recent additions)

  3. Project Specs/Deliverables • Dublin Core metadata • centralized database for record sharing • Web front-end for cataloging • up to 10,000 records • basic search interface for DAL staff • advanced search choices for end users • Unicode support for original/vernacular titles? (WFP)

  4. Work Flow • area/subject specialists find, evaluate, and select resources • specialists and students catalog resources (RB/CORC) • records reviewed and enhanced by others • cataloger adds LCSHs, checks record and use of fields (DC/MARC views) • cataloger and PM approve the record (SaveFile to RC)

  5. CORC vs. Record Builder • state of DC standard: 2, 3, “DAL” DC, other qualified (modifiers/schemes) • RB workform customization • system speed (submit, view, edit, re-submit) • data integrity (missing records, fields, field truncation, diacritic support) • DC-MARC mapping (CORC) • robust exporting (CORC)

  6. Outcomes • UW db BER uses MARC tags • original cataloging (DC) in CORC • periodic exports (MARC) • testing DC-MARC crosswalks (546/Language, 651/Country, 655/Type) • WebZ “portal” for DAL collection in CORC/WorldCAT • canned searches (thematics, What’s New)

  7. WebZ and Database Builder • using nf obi and MarcCatalog ini’s (Format/Rules) • obi format class (ORG.oclc.fmts.rules.Add856) in [ElectronicAccess] rule hotlinks URLs • externalLink definition in [target] stanza in pagesNoFrame.ini opens new window

  8. WebZ and DB (con’t) • invokes external.js with onClick event for new window w/ pre-defined size and placement • JS file called in nfbrief.html and nffull.html record display templates • ssdot append/update tested 4/17 (replace/update our best practice to date)

  9. Unresolved Technical Issues • WFP -- UTF-8 support badly needed (and promised) for storing, indexing, searching • RB “black box” -- MANTIS, dtd and xml templates, Unicode support (input and display other than workstation config) • division of labor between server (Java) and client (JS) tasks -- record marking, screen re-painting, server file handles/threads?

  10. (If There’s Time) Other Issues Outside SiteSearch • ownership of records (project vs. institutional affiliation) • extracts for OPACs • “rogue” site archive (ephemera metadata) • record “suppression” -- what’s required for record to “graduate” from SaveFile to public display?
