The IRAC – How it works… • IRAC is an ADVISORY committee • Main IRAC meets twice a month – 2nd & 4th Tuesdays • Since 1922 • IRAC Subcommittees – specialized topics • Ad Hoc groups – specialized topics • A collegial body…almost all work by consensus…voting is rare (except in FAS) • Experienced professionals • Many members have other duties such as communications engineering, etc.

  11. How a Federal Agency obtains a Freq. Authorization… • Field office or local DC office selects frequency (or frequency band)… • Sends request to its IRAC/FAS member • IRAC/FAS member submits to NTIA electronically • App is processed & reviewed for errors, etc. • App sent electronically to all IRAC/FAS members • FAS votes electronically • …if no problems… NTIA approves in 15 working days • Entry into Gov. Master File (GMF)

Types of Authorizations/Assignments • Single or multiple frequency assignment example: 412.225 MHz, 412.825 MHz • Band assignment example: shipborne radar 9300-9500 MHz • Equipment/system assignment example: AN/APG-xx radar 8500-9600 MHz • Area or franchise assignment example: cellular in a city -- FCC • Fleet licenses – e.g., Delta Airlines -- FCC • Equipment authorizations – e.g., CB; Part 15 devices • Some Combinations
