    3. 3 Purpose This Guidebook is designed to: Describe New York’s DPN Mentoring Initiative. Facilitate networking among navigators. Provide resources to build DPN capacity. It is a living document that will be revised periodically to: Update DPN contact information. Identify new resources to assist navigators. Incorporate input from the DPNs.

    4. 4 DPN Mentoring Initiative The Mentoring Initiative: Pairs new DPNs with veteran navigators. Matches DPNs with a particular expertise with navigators seeking to become more knowledgeable in that topic. These relationships will help DPNs: Address challenges in increasing access and the use of One-Stop services by people with disabilities. Obtain technical assistance on disability-related topics. Identify other resources that can help navigators do their jobs. Listen and provide advice (through a navigator sounding board) on the DPN’s role in the local One-Stop System.

    5. 5 How the DPN Mentoring Initiative Works Formal Pairings: Gary Shaheen, Managing Director at Advocates for Human Potential Inc., coordinates mentoring relationships by: Receiving requests from navigators seeking a mentor. Surveying DPNs to identify an appropriate mentor. Arranging a conference call meeting between the requestor and mentor. Facilitating the mentoring relationship and following-up in approximately one month to offer additional support.

    6. 6 How the DPN Mentoring Initiative Works (continued) Informal Referrals: Dan Moser or Cathy Reardon at the New York State Department of Labor assists in developing mentoring matches by: Receiving requests from navigators seeking a mentor. Referring requestors to potential mentors. (It is anticipated that these matches will be relatively short term; longer term relationships should be coordinated by Gary Shaheen.)

    7. 7 How the DPN Mentoring Initiative Works (continued) Direct Relationships: DPNs initiate contacts among themselves using the information contained in the Fellow Navigator’s section of the Guidebook. (These relationships are part of the on-going networking that already exists among navigators.)

    8. 8 Mentors Help Other DPNs in Two Major Ways Understanding the DPN Initiative: (Practical insights about the One-Stop System and the navigator’s responsibilities) The role of the DPN. Experiences of other navigators. Work within the One-Stop System. What seems to work. DPN reports and outcomes. Ongoing Support: (Follow-up contact and assistance as needed) Address individual, program and systems challenges. Provide specific knowledge on a particular topic using the resources offered by other DPNs.

    9. 9 Role of DPN Mentors Listening Brainstorming Sharing information and lessons learned to develop expertise Providing examples and guidance Proposing solutions to problems Helping with completing required reports Providing guidance on understanding/using Assistive Technology Offering peer support Facilitating integration of the DPN initiative in your One-Stop (System Building)
