  1. Civil War Alvin E. Busse Jr.

  2. Rationale It is important for 11th grade social studies students to understand the significance of and reasons behind the Civil War.

  3. Objectives Students will be able to: • Locate the East Region including Fort Sumpter on a map with 100% accuracy. • Discuss the importance of the Civil War. • Explain two or three reasons why the War in the East was crucial to the Civil War.

  4. CIVIL WAR

  5. CIVIL WAR • Civil War in the East • August 1861 to September 1862

  6. Reasons for the CIVIL WAR

  7. Fugitive Slave Law • The accused slaves did not have the benefit of jury trials, nor could they testify on their own behalf.

  8. Dred Scott Decision • In 1857, a case came about that some people including President Buchanan hoped would settle issues that divided North and South. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court’s decision divided Americans even more.

  9. Freeport Doctrine • During the Lincoln-Douglas debates, one of which took place in Freeport, Illinois, Senator Douglas refused to pass a slave code. No slaveholder would bring slaves into a territory without such laws. Douglas’s answer became known as the Freeport Doctrine.

  10. Failure to Compromise • Tie all the three reasons together

  11. Other reasons for the CIVIL WAR are: • Debate over Kansas was impassioned in both houses of congress. • Charles Sumner was beaten unconscious in the Senate chambers by the cousin of Senator Andrew Butler. • Sumner was unable to return to the Senate for 3.5 years. His empty seat became a shrine to those opposed to slavery.

  12. CIVIL WAR • What was the first battle of the Civil War in the East?

  13. CIVIL WAR • How would you classify the type of fighting that went on at Fort Sumpter?

  14. CIVIL WAR The previous facts lead to more discussion such as: • Debate over Kansas was impassioned in both houses of congress. • Which statements support that President Lincoln discussed the situation with his Advisors?

  15. CIVIL WAR Assessment - For homework-- You are to prepare a one page written comparison and contrast of three important events of the War in the East.
