Interpret means _________________. • Activate (or provide) Prior Knowledge • A simile is a form of figurative language that compares two things using the words “like” or “as”. • Which sentence is more descriptive? • The bird’s feathers are pink. • The bird’s feathers are as pink as bubblegum. • My dog can jump very high. • My dog can jump very high like a kangaroo. • CFU • Students, we already know that similes compare two things using the words “like” or “as”. In figurative language, sometimes the words don’t always mean exactly what they say. Metaphors are another form of figurative language we can use to compare two things. Concept Development • Figurative language is the use of words that go beyond their literal2 meaning. • Some examples of figurative language are similes, metaphors, hyperbole, and personification. • 2 basic meaning. • A metaphor describes an unfamiliar object by using the qualities3 of another object. • Metaphors are also used by authors to paint a more vivid4 picture of people, places, and things. • Metaphors are used by authors to convey5emotions. • Examples: The visiting team’s goalkeeper was a cheetah. • Robert never changes his mind.
