  1. T L S A Place for the Name 2nd Chronicles 6 December 8, 2011

  2. 2nd Chronicles 2 And Solomon determined to build an house for the name of efei, and an house for his kingdom.2nd Chronicles 2:1

  3. 2nd Chronicles 2 We might think that the greatest thing about Solomon was his wisdom, his riches, his proverbs or his writings Clearly for the Chronicler the most important thing about Solomon was the temple he built This was most important because it was most relevant to a community of returning exiles who struggled to build a new temple and to make a place for Israel among the nations again

  4. 2nd Chronicles 2 Chronicles’ record of Solomon’s achievements moves straight away to the construction of the temple Several important items in the account of his reign in Kings are left out as a result, such as his wisdom in action, administration, educational reforms, and some building activities (i.e., 1st Kings 3:16-4:34; 7:1-12) These were not unimportant, but, for Chronicles, they were all subsidiary to the temple

  5. 2nd Chronicles 2 And Solomon sent to Huram the king of Tyre, saying, As thou didst deal with David my father, and didst send him cedars to build him an house to dwell therein, even so deal with me. Behold, I build an house to the name of efeimy Elohim, to dedicate it to him, and to burn before him sweet incense, and for the continual shewbread, and for the burnt offerings morning and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts of efeiour Elohim. This is an ordinance for ever to Israel.2nd Chronicles 2:3-4

  6. 2nd Chronicles 2 And the house which I build is great: for great is our Elohim above all gods. But who is able to build him an house, seeing the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain him? who am I then, that I should build him an house, save only to burn sacrifice before him? 2nd Chronicles 2:5-6

  7. 2nd Chronicles 2 Of course, Solomon did not build a temple for a name but for a living God This stands in stark contrast to the Jew or the Christian today who would say that it is wrong to try to pronounce God’s Name Solomon understood the importance of the Name and he revered it even in the building of the temple!

  8. 2nd Chronicles 2 • Solomon also used this phrase because he wanted to explain that he didn’t think the temple would be the house of God in the way pagans thought • This is especially shown in his words, “…who is able to build Him a temple, since heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain Him?” • By the standards of the paganism of his day, Solomon’s conception of God was both Biblical and high

  9. 2nd Chronicles 2 Solomon did not view the temple as a place to which God would be confined He did expect, and the Scriptures prove that he received, manifestations of the Presence of God in that house The temple’s primary value was that it afforded mana place in which he could offer incense; that is, the symbol of adoration, praise, worship, to efei

  10. Revelation 8 And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand. Revelation 8:3-4

  11. Let’s 2nd Chronicles 6 Read

  12. Babel: What was Wrong? And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. Genesis 11:1-3

  13. Babel: What was Wrong? And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. And efeicame down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. Genesis 11:4-5

  14. Babel: What was Wrong? And efeisaid, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. Genesis 11:6-7

  15. Babel: What was Wrong? So efeiscattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because efeidid there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did efeiscatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth. Genesis 11:8-9

  16. Did You Catch It? And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. Genesis 11:4

  17. Did You Catch It? They wanted to make a name for themselves – this is a refusal to worship and honor YHWH! Reaching Heaven meant reaching God…through human means They were trying to exalt themselves over and against God, to be independent of Him and to be self-sufficient They wanted to make their own religion and reject God

  18. Same Thing in Romans For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. Romans 1:18-19

  19. Same Thing in Romans For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Romans 1:20-21

  20. Same Thing in Romans Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Romans 1:22-23

  21. The Beginning of Paganism Consequently, some people view the tower episode as the beginning of paganism and idolatry

  22. Summary and Bonus Homework The name of efei is the essence of who He is The name of Yeshua is another example – YHWH is our salvation! The intimate relationship He wants is there if you will study the Scriptures and look past denominations and people Look to Him!

  23. Summary and Bonus Homework Homework: What were the names of the pillars that Solomon erected in front of the temple? Why were they named that?
