  2. OBJECTIVE:Students will become better acquainted with the writing and naming of chemical compounds and the use of chemicals in everyday life in foods and products that are used in the home.

  3. INSTRUCTIONS: • Neatly cut out a minimum of 20 original labels from foods and products you use everyday including the ingredients and the name/brand of the product. Mount each label neatly on a clean sheet of white paper and number them from 1 to 20 (or more). 2 points will be deducted for each missing label! • You may use any food product or any items with chemical compounds listed. For example….

  4. You may use medicines (this includes vitamins)

  5. You may use pet products

  6. You may use toiletries Examples: - toothpaste - lotion - mouthwash - soap - shampoo - makeup - shaving cream

  7. You may use cleaning products

  8. You may use candies

  9. You may use slim fast or diet food labels

  10. You may NOT use single elements. They must be compounds. Na

  11. 3. From these 20 labels (or more) you must find at least 35 different chemical compounds on them that you recognize. You will write the chemical formulas and the chemical names using the rules from our notes for chapter 7 on the paper you mounted the label. You must underline the name of each compound on the label.

  12. 4. Number each chemical compound sequentially from 1 to 35.

  13. Any duplication of compounds will result in a 5 point deduction per duplication.

  14. Example: The ingredient is underlined in the label. Each ingredient is numbered with the name and formula given. On the next label, the number for the ingredients will start on number 5.

  15. Some companies provide ambiguous or unconventional chemical names to protect trade secrets. If you choose to use these compounds, you must provide each possible standard way of naming and writing these chemical formulas. Example one: Tin chloride would be written as: Tin (II) chloride / Stannous chloride SnCl2 Tin (IV) chloride / Stannic chloride SnCl4 Example two: Dipotassium phosphate would be: Potassium phosphate K3PO4 Potassium hydrogen phosphate K2HPO4

  16. 6. Hole punch all papers and place in a brad or small ring binder. • Your project should be assembled BEFORE you get to class. • It will be counted late if it is not ready when I call for it.

  17. 7. Include a decorated cover page with a title, your name, date, and period. (5 points) Example: Chemical Compounds Project Your Name February 18, 2011 Your period (Don’t forget the decorations!)

  18. Include a table of contents that gives the name/brand of each product label and a list of all chemical names and formulas you used for that label (15 points). The numbering system for the labels and compounds must correspond to the numbering system used within the project. Example: Table of Contents • Mega vitamins (medicine) 1. sodium chloride NaCl 2. magnesium sulfate MgSO4 2. Superyummy Cat Snax (pet product) 3. aluminum sulfate Al2(SO4)3 4. magnesum chloride MgCl2 3. Sparkly toothpaste (toiletry) 5. sodium fluoride NaF

  19. You will be graded on accuracy (2 points for each compound = 70 points) and neatness (10 points).

  20. 10. No LATEprojects will be accepted. If you are deathly ill, you must get someone to bring your project to school.

  21. The project will count as A MAJOR TEST GRADE! Test

  22. Extra Credit • Completely typed: +5 points • Completely, creatively, and meaningfully decorated: +5 points
