Poems - Use these to help you analyze what is in YOUR poem. • “Analysis of Baseball” by May Swenson on pages 595-596 and “Summer” by Walter Dean Myers on page 592 • Alliteration, assonance, consonance, onomatopoeia (sound devices) • These sound devices call your attention to the words and lines they are used in. Think about the significance. • “Uncoiling” by Pat Mora on pages 555-556 • Personification, imagery, shape • “Casey at the Bat” by Ernest Lawrence Thayer on pages 631-632 • Narrative poem – characters, PoV, setting, conflict/plot • “Fifteen” by William Stafford on page 633 • Mood, narrative poem - inferences

  4. Homework • Look for a song that uses as many of these devices as possible. • Bring in the title and artist of the song as well as a note of examples of literary devices and sound devices used. • Tomorrow in class we’ll work on analyzing our poems for these features.
