  1. The Rape of Nanking By Alex Morgan and

  2. Intro The Rape of Nanking, also known as the Nanking Massacre (also spelled Nanjing) was one of the most horrific events known to mankind, some say worse than the Holocaust. Sadly, the events of Nanking are little known to a large majority of the world, despite the brutality which took place. Imagine if you will: pools of blood, bodies without heads buried in the sand, rape, fetuses without wombs; this is Nanking, 1937.

  3. Why? And the results In 1936, after the defeat of the Japanese (q) at Shanghai, the Japanese felt defeated and angry at the Chinese. Several things resulted from the battle at Shanghai: First off, in 1928 the Chinese Nationalist Government switched Peking, the former capital of China (also known as Beijing) to Nanking. The city had held about 250,000 people, but since Shanghai’s attack, many refugees flooded the city, bringing the population count up closer to around one million. Secondly, the Japanese were now extremely agitated with the Chinese for defeating them embarrassingly at the Battle of Shanghai. Part of the belief for their invasion of Nanking was to enact revenge.

  4. The Rape In November of 1937, the Japanese reinvaded Shanghai and took over. By early December they had gotten to the outskirts of Nanking and attacked on December 9th. After only three days of battle the Chinese military had given up and were retreating on the 12th to the other side of the Yangtze River (also known as Yangzi Jiang). The next day the 6th and 16th Divisions of the Imperial Japanese Army entered the main sector of the city and by the afternoon two Japanse Navy fleets arrived. In the next six weeks that ensued, well into the next year, the Japanese army committed sins rarely known by any man. Looting and mass executions were common, resulting in the death of at least 300,000 Chinese; among those, 20,000 of the women were raped. As the Japanese profusely denies most of the Nanking Massacre, they add that most of these statistics are enormously exaggerated, going so far as to say that the even never even occurred; similar to the people who claim the Holocausts never happened.

  5. Slides (Some of) the following images are graphic due to their violent nature: Your warning has been given.

  20. The Surrender On board the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay, Japan on September 2, 1945, the Japanese sign the document of surrender.

  21. Yet, even after the surrender of the Japanese, they still continued to propagate their terror; here, an American pilot is to be decapitated by sword.

  22. The Denial To this day, many Japanese deny that the Rape of Nanking ever occurred, trying to snuff out its existence. And even those who do admit that it happened go so far as to state that many facts and statistics were made up. Even in 1990, the official Japanese government stated officially that the “Nanking Incident” ever even existed.
