  1. DiscussionSharpening The Case for EIC EIC User Group Meeting June 24-27, 2014 Supported by: Brookhaven National Laboratory, Jefferson Laboratory, RIKEN BNL Research Center & Stony Brook University Thanks to JianweiQiu Abhay Deshpande

  2. Let’s start with a positive note!Clearing a time line issue…. Sharpening the Case for EIC

  3. NSAL LRP 2002 • Rec 1: Operate facilities, support University research • Rec 2: Rare Isotope Accelerator (RIA) new major construction • Rec 3: Underground laboratory • Rec 4: JLab upgrade to 12 GeV Other initiatives: RHIC II Luminosity Upgrade, Electron Ion Collider, 4p Gamma Ray Tracking Array, Neutron Initiative, Large Scale Computing Initiative, ORLaND. Sharpening the Case for EIC

  4. NSAC LRP 2002 Sharpening the Case for EIC

  5. So Tim’s rule of thumb: NSAC Year of first mention + ~20 Years  2002 + 20 (25)  2022 – 2027 The main message we want to take from Tim’s talk is that: We have an opportunity this year. We can not afford to squander it for any reason!!! Sharpening the Case for EIC

  6. In 2013 the Nuclear Science Advisory (sub) Committee on future facilities called the EIC “central to the US nuclear science in the coming decade and beyond” The Long Range Plan was announced April 2014, schedules of town meetings leading to a resolution meeting in March/April 2015. (Report due October 2015) It is time to get the EIC enthusiasts together to review the case for the EIC as defined in the EIC White Paper (arXiv: 1212.1701v2) and many documents around that, based on a community wide input and effort. The aim of this meeting is galvanize these efforts in to “an argument for the EIC” that will result in the NSAC’s recommendation for the construction of the EIC as the facility to study QCD in the next decade (beyond the other ongoing construction projects within Nuclear Physics) Sharpening the Case for EIC

  7. Compelling Questions in QCD Sharpening the Case for EIC

  8. Important Questions that should always be on your mind: Is the science compelling? Is it articulated well? Not just for the EIC or high energy QCD enthusiasts, but also for broader Nuclear Science community? Connections to other parts of nuclear physics? “So What?” Input from broader physics community to improve the executive summary? Sharpening the Case for EIC

  9. Panelists + Presenters • Feng Yuan, Franck Sabatie, Will Brooks, Yuri Kovchegov, Al Mueller, Bob Tribble • Message from the Lab directors: Bob McKeown, Berndt Mueller • + Any one who wants to say something… Sharpening the Case for EIC

  10. Sharpening the Case for EIC

  11. Questions raised in this meeting so far: • RHIC Spin was already sold on nucleon-spin. Why do you need another collider now? • EIC is necessary, but will be sufficient? Sharpening the Case for EIC

  12. Why a polarized high-energy collider? Sharpening the Case for EIC
