  1. CARDIO Look at page 95. Why was the development of new farming technology important to the settling of the Plains region ?

  2. Section 3: The Emergence of a World Power The Industrial Revolution created a huge labor force, or supply of workers. But most of them were paid too little to support their families. People moved to the Midwest, hoping their lives would be better there. The Homestead Act of 1862 gave 160 acres of land to any adult who agreed to farm it and live there for five years.

  3. In 1929, the United States experienced an economic disaster called the Great Depression.Factories closed, people lost their jobs, and farms went out of business.

  4. In 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt created a plan called the New Deal. These were government programs to help people get jobs and restore the economy.

  5. From 1941 to 1945, the United States was involved in World War II. In the Soviet Union, the form of government was communism, where the state—not the citizens—owns all the property. The United States feared that communism would spread around the world, and the Cold War, a period of tension when there wasn’t actually fighting, began. After World War II, the U.S. economy improved. But not everyone was happy. Segregation was still a way of life in many places. Martin Luther King, Jr., led the civil rights movement to win equal rights for African Americans.

  6. Classroom Discussion Questions • What was the purpose of the New Deal and why was it needed? • Which people tried to help the poor?

  7. Section 4: Settlement, Trade, and Independence in Canada Both France and Great Britain were fighting over control of Canada. In 1713, they signed a peace treaty dividing up the country. But the French Catholics and the British Protestants had trouble getting along, and both countries wanted control over the valuable Ohio River Valley. In 1754, The Seven Years’ War broke out, and in the end Great Britain gained complete control over Canada.

  8. Canada has become a rich and powerful country. But the French-speaking and English-speaking Canadians still have their problems. In 1976, the French Canadians said they didn’t want to be part of Canada anymore. A solution was to make Canada a bilingual country, with two official languages—English and French. Canada also became a completely independent country.
