1 samuel 3 6 nkjv
1 Samuel 3:6 (NKJV)

  • Then the LORD called yet again, "Samuel!" So Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." He answered, "I did not call, my son; lie down again."

  • (Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, nor was the word of the LORD yet revealed to him.)

  • “Samuel did not yet know the Lord” - He had not been accustomed to receive any revelation from him. He knew and worshipped the God of Israel; but he did not know him as communicating especial revelation of His will. Adam Clarke

1 Samuel 3:8 (NKJV)

  • And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. Then he arose and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you did call me." Then Eli perceived that the LORD had called the boy.

  • And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. Then he arose and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you did call me." Then Eli perceived that the LORD had called the boy.

  • Why did it take three times for Eli to figure this out?

  • (1 Sam 4:15 NKJV) “Eli was ninety-eight years old,”

  • (I Sam 3:1) And the word of the LORD was rare in those days; there was no widespread revelation.

Next time answer correctly
Next time: Answer Correctly!

  • (1 Sam 3:9 NKJV) Therefore Eli said to Samuel, "Go, lie down; and it shall be, if He calls you, that you must say, 'Speak, LORD, for Your servant hears.' " So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

This is Awesome! God is Calling!

  • (1 Sam 3:9 NKJV) Therefore Eli said to Samuel, "Go, lie down; and it shall be, if He calls you, that you must say, 'Speak, LORD, for Your servant hears.' " So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

  • This is easy to read, but hard to imagine.

  • Here is a young boy being told that God is calling.

  • How can you answer?

  • How can anyone sleep?

1 samuel 3 10 nkjv
1 Samuel 3:10 (NKJV)

  • Now the LORD came and stood and called as at other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel answered, "Speak, for Your servant hears."

  • Now the LORD came and stood and called as at other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel answered, "Speak, for Your servant hears."

  • Then the LORD said to Samuel: "Behold, I will do something in Israel at which both ears of everyone who hears it will tingle.”

  • "In that day I will perform against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end.

The Day gets closer

  • 1 Samuel 3:12 (NKJV)"In that day I will perform against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end.

  • (1 Sam 2:34 NKJV) 'Now this shall be a sign to you that will come upon your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they shall die, both of them.

  • "For I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knows, because his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them.

1 Samuel 3:13 (NKJV)

  • "For I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knows, because his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them.

  • So it may be that what we had in I Samuel 2 was a warning, but Eli did not respond to it.

The verdict continues
The Verdict Continues

  • (1 Sam 3:14 NKJV) "And therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever."

  • And he said, "What is the word that the Lord spoke to you? Please do not hide it from me. God do so to you, and more also, if you hide anything from me of all the things that He said to you."

He should have known, or at least had a pretty good idea what the message was. After all, he had been told in the last chapter what was going to happen to him.

1 samuel 3 18 nkjv
1 Samuel 3:18 NKJV)

  • (Lev 10:1-3 NKJV) Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. {2} So fire went out from the LORD and devoured them, and they died before the LORD. {3} And Moses said to Aaron, "This is what the LORD spoke, saying: 'By those who come near Me I must be regarded as holy; And before all the people I must be glorified.' " So Aaron held his peace.

  • "Why has the LORD defeated us today before the Philistines? it (the ark) may save us from the hand of our enemies.“

  • How does that work?
