  2. Today’s Objectives • Describe the physical changes of adolescence • Explain the cognitive changes and the fallacies of cognition in adolescence • Critique the changes in personality and social development • Determine the root causes for the problems of adolescence

  3. Physical Changes • Growth Spurt • Sexual development: puberty • Early development due to hormones in preservatives • Sexual activity is occurring at increasingly younger ages • Teen pregnancy is higher than it has been in 20 years

  4. Cognitive Changes • Egocentric version of formal operations stage • 2 fallacies of teen cognition • Imaginary audience: delusion that one is constantly being observed by others • Personal fable: delusion that one is unique, unrealistically important and invulnerable

  5. Personality and Social Dev. • Form an identity from intense self-exploration (identity crisis) • Relationships with peers- desperate need to fit in with peers; formation of cliques • Relationships with parents- realize parents are fallible and rebel against the guidance parents wish to provide

  6. Problems of Adolescence • Decline in self-esteem- negative body image and ?s over intelligence • Depression and suicide- highest affected group suffering from major depression, alcohol/drug abuse, and suicide rates • Youth violence- overall decrease in crime, but a rise in youth violence
