The Summative Review • Visit w/c 14 February 2011 • Reviews the quality of the HE student learning experience • Covers all aspects of the College’s management of its HE provision • Takes account of the role of the awarding body • No college nominees on the review team • Summative review report is published openly

  4. The 3 Themes The Summative Review process explores the 3 core themes of IQER • Academic standards • the level of achievement a student has to reach in order to achieve a particular award or qualification • Quality of learning opportunities • the effectiveness of everything provided by the college, to ensure that students have the best possible opportunity to meet the stated learning outcomes of their programmes and academic standards of the awards they are seeking to achieve • Public information • Information about academic programmes, academic standards and the quality of learning opportunities published by the college

Possible Outcomes • Provisional judgements related to core themes 1&2 (Academic standards and Quality of Learning Opportunities) • Confidence • Limited confidence • No confidence • Provisional conclusion related to core theme 3 (Public Information) • Reliance can be placed • Reliance cannot be placed • May also reach the conclusion that the information is accurate, but incomplete, or vice versa. • identifies good practice and recommendations

What we need to do • Central Team • Produce Self Evaluation Document (SED) • Facilitate Student Written Submission (SWS) • Track progress of Action Plan from the Development Engagement • Collate central evidence • Prepare baseroom • Programme Teams • Familiarity with QAA’s Academic Infrastructure • Contributions to Quality File • Assist in engaging students • On standby, attend meetings • Quality & Standards • Policy review, check, update, communicate • Ensure flow of information between the College and OU

Self Evaluation Document (SED) • Headings • Introduction to College and awarding bodies • Details of College responsibilities for HE • Outline of recent changes affecting HE provision Structured around the 3 themes • academic standards • quality of learning opportunities • public information Deadline w/c 22 Nov 2010

Student Written Submission (SWS) • Students are invited to produce a Student Written Submission (SWS) • Student submission should reflect students own views of their experience as learners but could include: • Information college publishes • Information given to students about assessment etc • Experience as a learner • Feedback • Quality of learning resources and facilities • opportunity to get involved • Methods could include focus groups, questionnaires and a forum • Submission a 3-4 page written report Deadline w/c 22 Nov 2010

Academic Infrastructure provides guidance on maintaining quality and standards for universities and colleges. sets out expectations for the level and broad content of higher education awards set out expectations about standards of degrees in a range of subject areas. concise description of the intended learning outcomes of an HE programme

  10. Quality File • The Quality File is a revised version of the Course Audit • A means by which we collate evidence of how our programmes are managed • The Quality Files will provide key evidence and made available to the Summative Review Teams in the base room during the visit
