Lab Safety. Syracuse High School. Biology Lab. We share the lab with Mr Denos’ class, so be respectful of all materials. Don’t put items in cages or aquariums without permission. No goofing off or practical jokes. No squirting water across the tables. Fire.

  1. Lab Safety Syracuse High School

  2. Biology Lab • We share the lab with Mr Denos’ class, so be respectful of all materials. • Don’t put items in cages or aquariums without permission.

  3. No goofing off or practical jokes • No squirting water across the tables

  4. Fire • Flammable materials, like alcohol, and long hair need to be kept away from Bunsen burner flames and hot plates. • If a lab fire erupts, immediately notify Mr Wright.

  5. Fire extinguisher • Location of the fire extinguisher is North side of Lab by biology prep room exit. Proper use of the fire extinguisher Close gas valves in lab, on extinguisher pull pin, squeeze handle, point at base of flames.

  6. Goggles/Eye protection • Most labs require eye protection/goggles. • Use when chemicals, heat, or glassware are used to prevent injury and blindness. • Eyeglasses usually don’t protect your eyes against acids or chemicals. Wear goggles over eyeglasses.

  7. Long hair • Tie back your long hair before using hotplates or Bunsen burners. • Keep your beautiful long hair!

  8. Lab Clothing not to wear • Very loose fitting • Dangling jewelry • Sandals

  9. Instructions in the lab • Read them, understand them, follow them!

  10. Glassware • Examine first for cracks. • Clean any dirty glassware prior to use. • When heating test tubes, point open end away from people. • Hot glassware has no color. Use test tube tongs to hold test tubes. • Don’t put cold water on hot glassware- it can shatter! • Broken glass is put in the broken glass box, use a sweeper and dustpan.

  11. Equipment • If it doesn’t work, turn it off if applicable, and tell Mr Wright

  12. Glass tubing • To place a glass tubing into a rubber stopper lubricate tube with water or glycerin, use a towel or cotton gloves for protection, twist carefully to insert.

  13. Injuries, Chemical spills • Notify Mr Wright immediately • Apply first aid • If needed Mr Wright will call the office which will call 911 if a life is in danger.

  14. Acid/Base spills • Wash your skin with plenty of water • Eyewash • Safety shower

  15. Rinse biological specimens • Wash your hands with soap and water after the lab.

  16. After labs • Put chemical wastes in containers Mr Wright places and labels for each waste on the lab tables. • Don’t wash wastes down the drain, unless Mr Wright allows it. Some wastes can destroy the drain pipes. • Dirt clogs the pipes, don’t wash dirt down the drain!
