  1. Warm-Up… 5 mins quiet writing • LT 1.1: “I can use safe procedures in the science classroom and lab.” • Agree or disagree? (write the statement and answer in your notebook pg __.) • Lab accidents happen 50 times more often than chemical factory accidents. • Lab accidents may result in permanent injury. • Following lab rules decreases chances of accidents by 90%. • Labs are a dangerous place for students.

  2. Learning Target 1.1 • I can determine and use appropriate safety procedures. • I know the names and location of safety and lab equipment in my classroom.

  3. Activity One: 20 mins • View and take notes on the lab safety power-point. • Set up your notebook pgs __: • Title: Lab safety Notes • Number your paper from #1 to #20, leaving 2 lines between each number.

  5. 1. Use lab only when directed by a teacher (bad stuff will happen otherwise…)

  6. 2. Behave responsibly in the laboratory.

  7. 3. Never work with chemicals without checking labels carefully, and only when directed by the teacher On a side note, please let me know if there is an unlabeled container of fluid…

  8. 4. Have the teacher place broken glass and disposables in appropriate designated containers Don’t hide it! If you break something, let me know right away!

  9. 5. Report accidents

  10. 6. Report any unsafe situation to the teacher

  11. If it seems like a bad idea… it probably is… Some people need to be saved from themselves.

  12. This car is propped up on two 4x4's and resting against the curb. The man under the car is WELDING... next to the vehicles GAS TANK and he's sitting underneath where he's working.

  13. 7. Never taste substances without teacher direction. No eating, drinking, gum chewing, applying makeup in the laboratory. And then the vomiting…

  14. 8. Confine long hair and loose clothing

  15. 9. WASH HANDS BEFORE LEAVING THE LAB!!! People ALWAYS rub their eyes!

  16. 10. Keep paper, etc… away from heat sources

  17. 11. Follow proper techniques

  18. 12. Absolutely no horseplay in the lab

  19. 13. Work only with the materials and equipment that you have been directed to use. And don’t do this…

  20. 14. Do not harm live animals! Only handle organisms as directed by your teacher.

  21. 15. Use safety equipment only in an emergency

  22. In case of fire…

  23. GET OUT!

  24. If you are on fire… Use the shower or fire blanket

  25. 16. If you splash any chemical on yourself, rinse thoroughly and alert the teacher

  26. 17. Protect your eyes, when directed by your teacher!

  27. Often too late… use the goggles! Ugh! (Don’t be this guy!)

  28. Chemical burn to the eye

  29. 18. Chemical spill?

  30. Tell the teacher, do not clean it yourself!

  31. 18. Broken glass?

  32. Tell the teacher!

  33. 19. Laboratory materials must stay in the laboratory area!

  34. 20. If a fire drill or evacuation emergency occurs, be sure to turn off all burners and electrical equipment.

  35. Location of Fire Extinguisher? Fire blanket? Eye wash? Know their locations!

  36. Activity Two: 20 mins • Turn to pg __ in your notebook • Title it “Lab Area Map” • Draw a DETAILED map of the lab area in your science room. Include the back door. • Mark and label the following safety equipment: • Fire blanket fire extinguisher eye wash • Fume hood goggle cabinet • broken glass disposal • Label exits in case of emergency

  37. Wrap Up 5 mins • Come back to the class area • Write on pg. __ – what could you do if this happens to you? (complete sentences) • Your equipment is not working. • You cut yourself or burn yourself. • You have chemical waste and are not sure what to do with it. • A liquid splashes in your eye. • You accidentally drop a beaker and it breaks. *** lab safety contract is due Friday! No contract = no labs!
