  3. The 5-Steps to take ... 3 1. SEIRI : Sort-out & eliminate those items that are not required. 2. SEITON Systematically set-out or arrange the items you actually need. 3. SEISO Scrub & clean regularly. Cleaning for the purpose of checking. (What has changed since the last time I cleaned?) 4. SEIKETSU Standardise and repeat good practices. 5. SHITSUKE Sustain and spread the efforts. Develop a sense of pride in your workplace.

  4. 4 Step 1:1S - Sort Out • Review and decide what you really need at your workplace. • Get rid of everything that is unnecessary. • Keep only those items you need • to do the job that you are actually working on. • Ask the same questions about any new arrivals… • “Do I really need this?” “Must it be stored here?”

  5. 5 Step 2:2S – Set In Order Once you decide what items you need to keep… Categorise them according to frequency of use: If you use something often, keep it close at hand. Decide on the most efficient storage method. Eliminate the need to ever have to search. Make the unnecessary or unusual stand-out immediately.

  6. 6 Step 3:3S – Scrub & Clean Remove all dirt, dust, stains and spills: i.e. anything that creates an unprofessional, inefficient or careless appearance. BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY: Cleaning is a form of inspection that allows you to become familiar with every nook & cranny of your workplace. Cleaning Is Checking Cleaning helps you to understand your work area and helps you to recognise changes which may have occurred since the last time you cleaned. The purpose of cleaning in 5S is to recognise changes and potential problems. THAT’S WHY WE DO IT REGULARLY!

  7. 7 5S Step 3: 3S–Scrub & Clean (cont’d) A good example of scrubbing and cleaning is when you clean your car by hand. HEAR: The exhaust is rattling. SEE: I see a scratch on the bonnet SMELL: I can smell burning. Maybe the clutch is worn. FEEL: The wheel seems to be very hot.

  8. 8 1S 2S Sort Out Scrub & Clean 3S RESULTS Set In Order Step 4:4S – Standardise Repeat the first 3 steps on a regular basis. Allocate time for implementation of the 3 basic steps. 4S A starting point for all other improvement activities. The objective is ‘Visual Control’

  9. 9 Step 5:5S – Sustain 5S needs to become a habit and a culture. Develop a sense of ownership of your own particular piece of the workplace. Develop a sense of pride in your workplace. Disorganisation & clutter cause inefficiency & stress.

  10. 11 Workplace Organisation Why is it so important? Creates a more professional appearance. Reduces the need to ever have to search for anything. Makes defects, errors, inefficiencies and changes easier to spot. Produces more useable space. Allows others to fill in for you in your absence. Improves safety in the workplace. Makes the workplace a more enjoyable (or bearable!) place in which to be.

  11. 12 Workplace Organisation Finally . . . It’s impossible to improve any process… if it’s so disorganised that you can’t even see what’s happening in the first place.
