  2. DEFINITION The Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) is primarily a student centered, student friendly resource center for all students. The office emphasizes prevention rather than crisis intervention and does have special emphasis on the under-represented in medicine and any other potentially disadvantaged students.

  3. MISSION • Our charge is to support and enhance the academic, educational, and cultural interests of our diverse constituency and to maximize all student abilities in the pursuit of a medical career.

  4. THE TENETS OF OMA • EMPOWERMENT - Seeks options and or interventions to help students feel more skilled. Ex. Recent skills lab for interested upcoming 3rd year students; USMLE “booster” 3 day free course • GLOBAL& COMMUNITY- Assist in referring and connecting to mission programs, local community service, and electives. Supports and offers community electives, support HRC, offers forum to present experiences etc. • MULTICULTURAL - We contribute to the development of physicians who are truly culturally competent in their skill levels by having trained and practiced medicine in diverse environments. This is accomplished by recruitment and maintenance of a diverse student body and faculty and promoting cultural competency training whenever possible (Grand Rounds, etc) • INSPIRATION - The OMA seeks to inspire all physicians in training for service and a feeling of urgency to reach out in humanitarian aspects of healthcare.

  6. FACULTY AND GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION • Recruitment and retention • Mentoring of students by faculty and GME • Support the adjustment and development of residents, fellows, and faculty as might be needed in unique circumstances

  7. LCME IS-16 Each medical school must have policies and practices to achieve appropriate diversity among its students, faculty, staff, and other members of its academic community, and must engage in ongoing, systematic, and focused efforts to attract and retain students, faculty, staff, and others from demographically diverse backgrounds.
