  3. National Standard Development – AGMA/AWEA • Setting the stage • AGMA founded in 1916 • AWEA founded in 1974 • Standards positions in relation to ANSI • Both designated by ANSI as SDO's • Both participate in international standards • National projects between AGMA and AWEA

National projects between AGMA and AWEA • Technical Report (Information sheet) • Medium size committee • AGMA/AWEA 921-A97, Recommended Practices for Design and Specification of Gearboxes for Wind Turbine Generator Systems • ANSI/AGMA/AWEA Standard • Large (international) committee • ANSI/AGMA/AWEA 6006-A03, Standard for Design and Specification of Gearboxes for Wind Turbines

International Standard Development – ISO/ISO and ISO/IEC • ISO/TC 60 with ISO/TC 67 • ISO 13691:2001 Petroleum and natural gas industries - High-speed special-purpose gear units • ISO/TC 60 with IEC/TC 88 (JWG) • Project started, introduced within IEC/TC 88 in 2003 • Joint Working Group formed between ISO and IEC in 2004 to complete a two phase program.

  6. Where the play is today • ISO/TC 60 with ISO/TC 67 • Revision of ISO 13691:2001 proposed • ISO/TC 60 with IEC/TC 88 (JWG) • Phase 1 is complete • Phase 2 is still at working draft stage

  7. Wind Turbine Standard ANSI/AGMA/AWEA 6006-A03 accept as an ISO-IEC Standard ISO 81400-4:2005 Developed by Manufacturers Suppliers Users Consultants Next revision in process ISO/IEC JWG Two meetings in 2004, three in 2005. International scope, most meetings 40+ attending

What seems to work • Chairman (Convenor) • Strong unbiased Leadership • Force all interested parties to express an opinion. • Drive discussions to a conclusion • Team work • Committee members as a team for a common goal • Desire for consensus with ability to compromise • Willing to accept a majority decisions, by a large %. • Technical expertise and knowledge • Know what came before, prior to attending a meeting • Have experience with what works for the application

  9. What may need adjusting • Team work • How WG meetings are conducted • Agreement in a WG or JWG • Technical expertise and knowledge • Theory use within standards • Defining a “Expert”
