Florida Kindergarten Readiness Screening (FLKRS) • “In accordance with section 1002.69, Florida Statutes, the Florida Department of Education shall annually calculate each provider’s readiness rate, expressed as the percentage of Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) students who are assessed as ready for kindergarten. The kindergarten readiness rate shall be based exclusively on the results of the statewide kindergarten screening for students completing the VPK program.” (AWI/VPK20, Statewide Provider Agreement)

Who Counts? • Tests are given in the first 30 days of Kindergarten • Children must have attended at least 70% • Children screened on at least 1 test • ECHOS- # children consistently or emerging divided by the # who were tested = Score • DIBELS - # children above average and low risk divided by # who were tested = Score • Add scores together = Readiness Rate

  5. Readiness Rates for ECLS • Range 164 – 266 • Florida Average: 244 • ELCof SWF Average: 231 • Lee County Average: 242 • Lee County VPK/HS/Title 1: 217 • Cut off for low performing site 211 or less • Low Performing Provider – 11 sites

Finding from Evaluation ReportDr. Jolenea Ferro • There is a positive correlation between children scoring above the 95th percentile on the Galileo Language and Literacy Scale and better readiness outcomes • 76% scored above average or low risk in DIBELS letter naming • 68% scored above average or low risk in DIBELS initial sounds

  11. Professional Development • Read and research • Attend all inservice training opportunities (August 7 & 12) • Attend focus groups/share sessions • Look for district staff development opportunities • Read Teacher Tidbits/Little Resource • Be part of school training, discussions, and articulate with kindergarten regularly • Go to Early Learning & Knowledge Center http://eclkc.ohs.acf.hhs.gov/hslc • Take the Emergent Literacy and/or ELL Course • Check out our website – LEARN Page, Early Childhood Learning Services • Attend staff meetings and trainings at your school • Attend kindergarten grade level meetings

Classroom Set Up • Review the Creative Curriculum • Is there a learning objective for all materials & every space? • Remove any “toys” • Ensure educational materials are readily available • Ensure that the classroom and materials are enticing to children • Materials should scaffold learning – change them throughout the year

Planning • Use your academic plan • Learning objectives that can be posted for every activity skills not activities • Today we are learning . . . . • Should be evident to anyone who enters the room AND to the children • Intentionally plan for systematic, explicit instruction • Intentionally plan for differentiated instruction • Change songs & activities – variety of levels • Follow your plan!!!!

  14. Instruction • Use every minute of every day • Revisit your schedule • Large Group • Naptime • Transition Times (12 x 5 = 60) • Learning Stations

  15. Ongoing Monitoring • Be accountable for what you learn, what you teach & what the students learn • Progress monitoring • Weekly Evaluation/Assessment • Work for mastery • Data Folders
