  1. Government Reform and Public Schooling

  2. How was government changing in the early 1800’s? • National and local governments changed to become more efficient and fair. • All areas of NC had equal representatives in government. • “Plank Roads” were built to make travel more efficient. The longest one was 129 miles. They were made from long, wide boards. • These allowed people to cut travel time in half

  4. Why did NC need these changes? • Many NC citizens were unhappy with how things were run within the state. • Some even moved to Tennessee and other neighboring states.

  5. How/when were schools established? • In 1853, a system called “public schools” was instituted in North Carolina. • They were also called “common schools.” • The state government began providing funding to county governments to set up their own schools.

  6. How was the money used? • Counties used state money to hire teachers and build/purchase buildings for schooling. • The first superintendent of NC schools was Calvin Wiley. • Wiley founded teacher-training institutes and other educational programs.

  7. How did society react to education? • Many families still valued farmwork over schooling. • Slowly, a system began to emerge and going to school became “the norm.” • Colleges and universities began duplicating, raising educational levels in the state.

  8. Who was Basil Thomasson? • He was a North Carolina resident who kept a diary of his educational experiences in the 1850’s. • He was one of the first people to stress the importance of public education for BOTH boys and girls. • Many people, at this time, still disagreed!

  9. Write your summary. • Draw a picture of what you imagine a school may have looked like in the 1800’s.
