  1. Doxology • Prov 14:4 Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox. • Clean, quiet, less labor (like when kids leave) • Strength and prosperity (Psalm 127:5) • An Ox Knows: Isa 1:3 The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider. • An Ox Teaches: 1 Sam 15:14 And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?

  2. Luke 13:10-17 • 15 The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering? • Ox works well when he receives the proper care • Required process even on the Sabbath (Deut. 5:13-14) • Extreme (see watering as work, allow more activity) • On normal work days do not muzzle: Deut. 25:4 • Financial support of preachers: 1 Cor. 9:9-11 • Financial support of elders: 1 Tim. 5:17-18

  3. Luke 14:1-6 • 5 And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day? • Accident (special circumstance) fell into a pit • Not normal, intended, manipulated • Pushed in pit to justify work on the Sabbath • Emergency needs to be addressed: Deut. 22:4 • Luke 10:30-37: Special Circumstance neglected by the priest and Levite (perhaps for worship duties)

  4. Luke 14:16-24 • 19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. • Reason to not attend (work, out of town, both) • Purposely schedule business travel on Sunday • Consider Elisha: 1 Kings 19:19-20 • Unresponsive audience: fulfilled by other things • Matt. 5:3 poor, 4 mourning, 6 hungry… • God extends His love toward all

  5. Oxology • Normal Routine: taking the ox to water • Emergency Situation: ox has fallen in a pit • Either case is handled even on the Sabbath • Excused from local worship services: • For being out of town (worshipping elsewhere) • For being sick (contagious, not able to go to work) one family member keeps five home for a sniffle • For having to work (not volunteer, teen job) • The ox knows His master, Do we?
