Genesis—A Chosen People • Hagar and Ishmael and then the birth of Isaac. • (Genesis 16-17) • Concubine surrogacy: Hager b/c Sarah was barren • The birthright of children in that time: Eldest son gained all ownership, concern for Sarah • Circumcision as a permanent mark of covenant with God, still occurs for all Jewish males at 8 days old. • The rite of circumcision (britmilah) is performed on the eighth day of a boy's life. • Circumcision is commanded in Genesis 17:10-14 as an outward sign of a man's participation in Israel's covenant with God.

  3. Jacob’s Sons –the Twelve Tribes of Israel • Genesis 37-41: • Asher,Benjamin,Dan, Gad, Issachar, Joseph, Judah, Levi, Naphtali, Reuben, Simeon and Zebulun • Jacob, whose name was changed to Israel, had two wives and two concubines by whom he had 12 sons and a daughter. • Jacob's favorite wife was Rachel who bore him Joseph. • Jacob was quite open about his preference for Joseph, the prophetic dreamer, above all others. • Joseph's brothers were jealous, sold Joseph into slavery, covered his coat of many colors with animal blood, which they then showed to Jacob, and ultimately led to the movement of the Hebrews into Egypt.

Read Exodus 12 • What are the provisions for the Passover. • “This month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year. • Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb • Every firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die • The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats. • Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs. • That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast.

  6. Discuss as the meal of the Last Supper.  • What we call the last Passover Jesus celebrated • Pesah :Hebrew word for Passover • Pascha :Latin word for Passover • Jesus can be referred to as the paschal lamb because he sacrificed his life

  7. Leviticus and Deuteronomy—People of the Law • Two parts of Leviticus: • 1. Ritual Sacrifices • 2. The Holiness Code. • Selected parts of Lev. 17-26 (11; 19:9-19; 19:23-37) • What are the food laws in Chapter 11. • Can eat any animal that has a part or a split in its hoof and that chews the cud. God is telling us not to eat animals such as pigs, rabbits, camels and horses • We should not eat cats and dogs or any other animal that has four legs and paws
