  6. ¿Cuándo se usa el tiempo imperfecto? • 1. To express Background Information / Conditions (including weather, age, time, and physical description) Often these are things that set the scene of a story / event. • 2. To express Emotions(thoughts) / Attitudes/habitual actions • 3. Simultaneous Actions (actions in progress) • 4. On-going Actions (was/were + -ing) • Non-specific period of time

  7. You’ve already learned to use the preterite tense to talk about completed actions in the past. Now you’ll review another past tense called the imperfect!! • You can use the imperfect in the following ways: • To speak about background events in a story. • To talk about something you used to do as a habit. A repeated or habitual activity • To speak about physical characteristics • To express thoughts and Emotions • To express time, age, and weather

The imperfect tense is also used to refer to actions in the past that occurred over an extended period of time. • ( I used to walk every day.Yo caminaba cada día.) • The imperfect tense is also used to "set the stage" for an event that occurred in the past • (I used to eat paella frequently.Yo comía frecuentemente paella.) (We were coming home when we saw Juan.Veníamos para casa cuando vimos a Juan.) • Actions which are not physical, that is feelings and mental actions, usually use the imperfect tense. • (….Juan was feeling sick.Juan estaba enfermo.) • The imperfect is frequently associated with phrases that describe the frequency of past actions.
