  1. SATs in English 2014 What can we expect?

  2. In their shoes? • The moonlight reflected off the windows of the old mansion. The wind whistled eerily throughout the bare branches of the tree in the deserted garden. Somewhere an owl hooted...

  3. Reading Test (levels 3-5) • The Reading paper remains unchanged. • I reading booklet, containing different types of text – pupils have 15 minutes to read (only). • 1 answer booklet, containing questions on each text and final page questions asking pupils to make comparisons between the texts – pupils have 45 minutes to answer all of the questions.

  4. Writing Test • There is still a Writing Test (produced by QCA), which is sent out to schools to be administered in the SATs week, however, this in marked internally. • The result of this test is taken alongside all of the written work, produced across the curriculum, for each pupil. • The level for writing comes from teacher assessment of work in year 6.

  5. Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Test (GAPS) • This is only the second year of this test. • A test of 50 (approximately) stand-alone questions to test the pupils’ knowledge of parts of speech, punctuation marks and practice and spelling. Externally set and marked. • Last year, in order to achieve level 5, students had to score at least 15/20 on the spelling test. It is essential they know the spelling rules and patterns, as they can now expect to be tested on these again at GCSE (or equivalent exam).

  6. What about the level 6 tests? • QCA guidance states that we can only enter students for the Level 6 test, who are working securely at 5A. • The Level 6 tests for reading, writing, and GAPS will take place in the afternoons on the days of the Level 3-5 tests. • The reading and GAPs tests will be marked externally. • The writing test will be assessed against the written work produced by one student across the curriculum.

  7. Level 6 Reading/GAPs tets • These are a real step up from the 3-5 paper. • Reading – students can expect pre 1914, challenging texts and answers will demand that they use the Point Evidence Explanation formula, showing mastery of it. • GAPs – students will be expected to show their own confident use of the whole range of punctuation and parts of speech as well as to identify this in stand-alone questions.

  8. SATs results • Reading – from the results of the reading paper. • GAPS – from the results of the test. • Writing – from teacher assessment of a pupil’s written work, across the curriculum. Written work will be moderated internally. Standards may be inspected by an external moderator from the LA.

  9. New Skills for 2013 • Previously, we have taught pupils how to use grammar and punctuation, in order to construct a whole text. • Now, we are also preparing them to answer a series of stand-alone questions on grammar and punctuation. • Success will depend on expertise and knowledge - REVISION

  10. How do I revise? • Do not presume that your child will know how to revise! • Work with them to teach the skills • Set 1 – yellowGAPs notebook • Other sets – purple class books/spelling books. • Commercial grammar/punctuation/spelling revision guide

  11. How do I revise?

  12. Visual learners • You could create a mind-map of what you can recall, instead of listing in bullet points.

  13. Auditory memory? • Instead of creating bullet points or a mind-map, another way would be to record what you can remember and play it back. • Build it up, until you have created your own ‘podcast’ of the key points, which you can us to refresh your memory.

  14. Revision Tips • Whatever method you choose, keep a record of your written/visual/auditory key points. • Use this resource for sessions of quick fire revision and before the exam. • Allow plenty of time. • Work in sessions of 45 mins. • Build in rest breaks.

  15. How can I help? • Get involved with their reading of anything! • Ask them to find information for you. • Check on their understanding of it by asking them to explain it to you. • Help with GAPS revision – www.educationquizzes.com and BBC KS2 Bitesize are really good sites for interactive learning and consolidation. • Get ‘hands-on’ with the process of revision and testing knowledge – excellent preparation for the future!
