  1. Testing Yourself! Chapter 12 Review

  2. Using Words • 1. platelets • 2. hemoglobin • 3. plasma • 4. leukemia • 5. anemia • 6. AIDS • 7. antibody • 8. hemophilia • 9. red blood cell

  3. Finding Main Ideas • 10. p.254; Blood types differ due to different types of protein found in the plasma or on the red cells. • 11. p.244; Blood picks up waste chemicals and excess body heat. • 12. p.244; Blood delivers nutrients, oxygen, water, minerals, and chemical messengers. • 13. p.256; Parts of the immune system are tonsils, thymus gland, lymph nodes, vessels, and fluid; spleen, bone marrow. Tears and mucus, and skin can also be include.

  4. Finding Main Ideas • 14. p.245; animals that do not have blood includes sponges, jellyfish, and flat worm. • 15. p.255; Blood cell proteins of type A will match with plasma proteins from type B will match with plasma proteins from A. The result is clumping. • 16. p.259; A person can get AID’s from body fluids during sexual intercourse, by sharing needles with someone who has AID’s, and a pregnant mother to her unborn child. • 17. p.257; Antigens are foreign substances that enter the body and cause disease. Antibodies are chemicals made by the white blood cells to destroy antigens.

  5. Using Main Ideas • 18. Plasma is 92% water and 8% other nutrients and salts. • 19. Antigens and antibodies have shapes that fit together like lock and key. When they interlock, the bacterium can be easily destroyed by white cells eating it or making it break apart. • 20. They act as if they have a memory when they produce antibodies that are capable of recognizing and destroying the same antigen many times, even years later.

  6. Using Main Ideas • 21. Red Cell protein shapes on types A and B blood cells different. Type AB red cells have both A&B protein shapes. Type O red cells have no red cell proteins. Type A plasma proteins fir type A cell proteins. Type B plasmas fit type A cell proteins. Type AB has no plasma proteins, and type O has both A and B. • 22. These animals live in water, which supplies these needs. • 23. Shots tell the immune systems to make antibodies against certain diseases.
