  1. Mitternacht “Midnight” Eduard Mörike Gelassen stieg die Nacht ans Land, Calmly the night climbs on the land, Lehnt träumend an der Berge Wand, Leans dreamingly on the wall of the mountains, Ihr Auge sieht die goldne Waage nun Her eye sees now the golden scale Der Zeit in gleichen Schalen stille ruhn; Of time resting quietly in the same bowls;

  2. Und kecker rauschen die Quellen hervor, And bolder murmur the springs forth, Sie singen der Mutter, der Nacht, ins Ohr They sing to the mother, the night, in the ear Vom Tage, of days, Vom heute gewesenen Tage. Of today’s former days.

  3. Das uralt alte Schlummerlied, The ancient old lullaby, Sie achtet’s nicht, sie ist es müd; She doesn’t notice, she is tired; Ihr klingt des Himmels Bläue süßer noch, To her sounds the sky’s blue sweetness still, Der flücht’gen Stunden gleichgeschwungnes Joch. The fleeing hours similar curved burden Doch immer behalten die Quellen das Wort, And yet always the springs keep their word, Es singen die Wasser im Schlafe noch fort And sing to the waters in sleep still Vom Tage, Of days, Vom heute gewesenen Tage.. Of today’s former days.
