  2. OBJECTIVE… To use picture clues, a media clip and a quote from the Qur’an to understand Muslims attitudes to infertility treatments.

  3. OUTCOMES… Grade C All will be able to select Muslim arguments FOR and AGAINST the use of fertility treatments. Grade B Most will be able to explain the meaning of a quote from the Qur’an and why it might be viewed differently by readers. • Grade A/A* • Some will be able to express an opinion on the Muslim attitude to surrogacy and compare Muslim and Christian attitudes to infertility treatments. Your GOALS for the end of this lesson are…

  4. Starter… What can you remember? What do Muslims believe about SEX? What do Muslims believe about the FAMILY? What do Muslims believe about LIFE?

  5. Sex… Family… Life… • It belongs in marriage • Purpose = procreation • ADULTERY = a SIN • Muslims have a DUTY to procreate. • Allah commanded that you should start a family once married. • Family = the heart of Islam. • Life is sacred • Life is a gift from Allah • Life is a TEST from Allah

  6. Commitment to the family… All Muslims are expected to have children as they believe it is what Allah wants. Infertility can be very painful for Muslim couples as they feel they are not carrying out Allah’s commands. Therefore most Muslims believe that help should be given to Muslims who cannot have children naturally. Despite this there are still some Muslims are completely against fertility treatment under any circumstances.

  7. Muslim views on infertility… SOME MUSLIMS... If a couple are infertile they MUST NOT have infertility treatments. MOST MUSLIMS.. IVF treatment is acceptable as long as the egg and donor are from the married couple. SOME MUSLIMS... IVF with donors is allowed but the child does not have full legal rights. There are THREE main Muslim attitudes to infertility treatments... WHY? WHY? WHY? What do YOU think? Can you give a reason WHY for each of these views ? THINK BACK TO THE STARTER Write a response for each (in turn) on your mini whiteboards.

  8. Arguments FOR and AGAINST… Look carefully at each of the statements on your sheet. • Decide which arguments are FOR and which are AGAINST the use of fertility treatments. • Now decide which Muslim views each of these arguments support by adding a 1, 2 or 3 next to each statement

  10. In the Qur’an… “To God belongs the dominion of heavens and earth. He creates what He wills. He bestows female (offspring) upon whom He wills, and bestows male (offspring) upon whom He wills. Or he bestows both males and females, and He leaves barren whom He wills. For He is All-Knowledgeable All-Powerful.” Explain in your own words what you think this quote is saying. How might this be used to argue FOR fertility treatments ? How might this be used to argue AGAINST fertility treatments ?

Surrogacy… • Why do you think they have made surrogacy illegal in Australia? • Most Muslims also agree that surrogacy is wrong – Why do you think this is? • Surrogacy is banned in Islam because: • It is seen as violating the marriage contract. • It is believed in Islam that the woman who gives birth to the child is its mother. Most Muslims also disagree with the use of sperm/egg donors as they feel this is like committing adultery (which violates the marriage contract). The also believe that all children have the right to know their biological parents. DO YOU AGREE?

  14. Christianity & Islam... Pair Share Think Draw the following table in the front of your books... Use what you have learnt about Christian and Muslim teachings about infertility and fertility treatments to list any similarities and any differences. Once you have some ideas share with a partner.

  16. PLENARY… You will be hot seated at random to answer the following questions… Why are some Muslims against surrogacy? Give ONE difference between Muslim and Christian attitudes to infertility treatments. Give ONE similarity between Christian and Muslims attitudes to infertility. What forms of infertility treatments will MOST Muslims accept? Why do some Muslims NOT accept infertility treatments? What do the majority of Muslims believe about infertility treatments?
