South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence • Additional Recommendations • Reinstate Alcohol Safety Schools for drinking & driving or other offences • Greater emphasis on community development to address basic needs • Expansion of accredited addiction and post-graduate training courses • Research to determine the population use of substances and identification of high-risk groups • Research to evaluate impact of current prevention and intervention services • Caution about comparing lessons learnt from tobacco control and applying these to alcohol • Cannabis use and dependency remains a huge problem and careful consideration is necessary to revisit legislation permitting medicinal use
