  1. About Harper Lee Paige Dennis, Marissa Hogan, Lauren Costa, Dominique Bigando

  2. Info & Family Life • Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926 in Monroeville, Alabama. • She was the youngest of five siblings. • Her father was a former newspaper editor and proprietor, who had served as a lawyer and state senator. • Her mother suffered from mental illness (believed to be bipolar disorder), rarely leaving the house. • She had a best friend named Truman Capote, a writer himself.

  3. College & Studies • Upon graduating, She started at the all-female Huntington College, where she participated in the literary honor society and glee club. • Then, she transferred to the University of Alabama from 1945-1949. • At Alabama, Lee contributed to the school’s newspaper and became an editor of “The Rammer Jammer,” a humor magazine for the school. • Her junior year she was accepted into the law school at the university, however it proved to be too demanding. She expressed that her true calling was writing.

  4. NYC life • Lee traveled to New York to pursue her dream of a literary career after dropping out of law school. • She struggled for several years, working as a ticket agent for Eastern airlines and for the British Overseas Air Corp (BOAC). • Lee reunited with old friend Truman Capote, who was rising to literary fame at the time.

  5. More in new York city • She became friends with Broadway composer Michael Martin Brown and his wife, and they supported her for a year so she could devote herself to writing. • The Browns also got her an agent: Maurice Crain who helped her publish her first and only book: To Kill a Mockingbird in 1959.

  6. Publication & Honors • Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1961. • The following year, the book was turned into a screenplay with the same title. The movie was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won four. • A play script based off of the book was written and produced in England in 1987. • In 2007, Lee was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for the influence of her book.

  7. Her life vs. her book • She was known as a loner and an individualist who struggled to develop friends or acquaintances with similar interests to hers. This may reflect in the main character scout in the novel to kill a mockingbird. • In the book, scout’s mother is dead. This could resemble how lee struggled to connect with her mentally ill mother. • The novel contains lots of issues over racism in regards to the legal system. Lee experienced this issue in her life, considering her father was a lawyer and she grew up around racism. • The time period and town she grows up in will also influence the story and characters.

  8. Considering lee when reading • Reading about Harper lee will help you make better connections with her novel. • Much of Lee’s experiences and beliefs translate into the book. • Her relationship with her best friend, mother, neighbors, etc. reflect in various characters of the novel as well.
