Today’s Purpose • Identify what Applied Research means to Coventry University (2015 objectives and strategy, current plans/targets/successes) • Raise awareness of development opportunities to support our Applied Research agenda • Meet colleagues that deliver AR Learning & Development and other colleagues

  3. 2015 Objectives Applied Research Strategy • Broad expectations: changing the University culture, & use of staff/other resources • But evolution not revolution as move to the next level • Organisation and management arrangements • Need to exploit collaboration, links and knowledge transfer opportunities • Focus across the University on Grand Challenges & the Research Excellence Framework 2014

  4. Applied Research Strategy • Aims, scope and role of applied research • Discipline-specific Research • Knowledge Transfer Activities • Pedagogical Research • The first AR strategy started in 2005 • Brings together all elements of the University Group • Driven by stretching Annual Targets

  5. Key Metrics 2011-12 • Group income £43m • Private sector to be 9% of total • Projects with international partners to increase to 20% of total income • Teaching: AR to be 80:20 • Maintain % of research-active staff

Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 • Coventry’s aim to improve on its institutional score of 2008 • Areas of submission: • Allied Health Professions, Nursing • Psychology • Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences • Mathematical Sciences • Computer Science and Informatics • General Engineering • Architecture, Built Environment and Planning • Business and Management Studies • Politics and International Studies • Art and Design
