  1. Warm up (write questions and answers in you notes) • What is chemistry? • What is your community?

  2. Warm up answers – What is chemistry? • Chemistry is the science of matter, especially its chemical reactions, but also its composition, structure and properties. Chemistry is concerned with atoms and their interactions with other atoms, and particularly with the properties of chemical bonds. • Chemistry is sometimes called "the central science" because it connects physics with other natural sciences such as geology and biology

  3. Warm up answers – What is your community • A group of interacting people, living in some proximity (i.e., in space, time, or relationship). Community usually refers to a social unit larger than a household that shares common values and has social cohesion.

  4. websites • Mr. Columbus’ website – class notes and assignments • http://mpssw.monroe.k12.mi.us/webpages/columbus/ • Powerschool - grades

  5. How do I get a good grade? • 25% labs • 25% folder • 25% tests • 25% work ethic • Don’t forget –final exam is worth 10% each of overall grade

  6. What’s a work ethic grade? • A • B • C • D • E • Attendance • Be prepared • Cooperation • Daily participation • Effort • 10 points per day

  7. Daily class outline • Warm up • Today’s activity • Cool down

  8. Dude this sounds tough, how do I get bonus points? • There is a list of suggestions on the course website

  9. I can… explain what an acid and a base are.

  10. Activities • Notes

  11. Warm up answers

  12. pH scale- how we can measure and report the acidic, basic, or chemically neutral character of a solution (is between 0-14)

  13. More about pH Acids Bases pH > 7 A pH of 14 is stronger (more basic) than a PH of 9 Many are made up of molecules that include hydroxide (OH-) ions (usually written last in the formula) Are also called alkaline solutions Turn litmus paper blue • pH < 7 • A pH of 1 is stronger (more acidic) than a pH of 6 • Are made up of molecules that include one or more hydronium (H+) ions (usually written first in the formula) • Turn litmus paper red

  14. Common acids and bases

  15. Consequences of varying pH values • In aquatic ecosystems • Low pH (high acidity): fish egg development becomes impaired, increase chance of being contaminated by heavy metals (because of leeching) • High pH (basic): the chance of beginning to dissolve away skin and scales of living things

  16. EPA Standards • Standards for drinking water • Between 6.5 and 8.5 • What most fish can tolerate • Between 5 and 9 • Normal readings for Snake River over the last couple of years • Has been between 7 and 8

  17. Cool Down • Write 2 different definitions of an acid • Write 2 different definitions of a base
