  1. NM USER FORUM 2014 Flight Efficiency Opportunity generationA use case for the GRRT tool Philippe Waroquiers NM Head of NeOs Team 30.01.2014

  2. What is the GRRT tool? • GRRT = Group ReRouting Tool • A tool to change the route or propose routes for flights

  3. Group ReRouting Tool : where can we use it ? • Flexible tool : used for multiple purposes and contexts • Strategical : e.g. prepare for an exceptional event • Pre-tactical : e.g. prepare PREDICTed traffic for the next days • Post-ops : e.g. study possible network improvements, produce KPIs, ... • Tactical : e.g. Flight Efficiency Opportunity generation • GRRT execution • under user control : “one shot, interactive” • unattended : “run it automatically, every day, at a certain time” • One use case is the Flight Efficiency Opportunity program: • the aircraft operator provides the information needed to setup (one or more) daily unattended automatic GRRT.

  4. How is a GRRT executed ? • Retrieve the Group of flights to reroute • For each flight, make a list of possible alternative routes • from automatically daily maintained route catalog (> 200_000 routes) • using the path finder : dynamic route generation • Compute the “cost” of each alternative route • “cost” is based on AO chosen cost criteria • e.g. route length, fuel, route charges, … • If a significantly cheaper route is found, • inform AO of the possible improvement: • Flight is marked as having an opportunity in CHMI/NOP flight list • Operational log contains the details : field 15, changes in route length, …

  5. Flight Efficiency : GRRT(s) registration info(to be provided by AO) • When and how to select the Group of flights for this GRRT • When to run this GRRT e.g. 09h00 • your AO list e.g. TCX CFG TCW VKG ART MYX • The take off time period e.g. from 11h00 till 17h00 • Route generation uses standard criteria (route catalog, path finder) • Give your cost specific parameters to evaluate the route • Desired minimum (total) improvement • Example : -100 Euros reduction minimum needed • Detailed cost criteria • Example: 1 minute of delay = 40 Euros 1 ton of fuel = 850 Euros 1 minute flying time = 10 Euros

  6. Cost criteria balancing by GRRT • GRRT automatically searches the route with the cheapest total cost • Cheapest opportunity might deteriorate some criteria : • deteriorate some criteria (e.g. ground delay, route length)but improve some others (e.g. flying time, fuel)ifin total it is more efficient (cheaper) • Example: 1 minute of delay = 40 Euros 1 NM = 20 Euros • + 5 minutes delay, -20 NM : cheaper +200 -400 = -200 • + 5 minutes delay, -5 NM : more expensive +200 -100= +100 • -15 minutes delay, +10 NM : cheaper -600 +200= -400 • What if huge delay (e.g. strike):-200 minutes delay, +350 NM : cheaper -8000 +7000 =-1000 • To avoid excessive balancing, specify a limit deterioration :1 NM = 20 Euros limit deterioration: 100 NM

  7. GRRT dynamic route generation and evaluation • Done using up to date information: • Last meteo information (wind) • Last minute opening (or closing) of routes • Based on current/detailed ATFCM situation (delays, closures) • => generate opportunities that allows to benefit • from a shorter route if the delay situation improves on this route • from a shorter route thanks to a last minute opening • from route that avoid severely regulated area • from better route efficiency (fuel, flying time) thanks to up to date wind • …

  8. GRRT : real operational case (internal screen to input AO params)

  9. Result (similarly visible in CHMI/NOP operational log) interesting route and its TOT validity current route cost: 2943 (3043)(-100) + 0 + 496 + 0 + 2007 + 540 interesting cheapest route cost: 2800(0) + 0 + 452 + 0 + 1808 + 540 Other routes (less interesting and/or more expensive) followsordered by cost

  10. Improvement in NM 18.0 : flexible Group Flight selection (in internal screen to input AO params) • Wildcards on any column of the GRRT Selection tab • Allows to have different GRRTs (and cost criteria) • Per aircraft type group e.g. for small/medium/big aircrafts • For some specific city pairs • For regulated flights or non regulated flights • For flights having a big delay • ….

  11. Other improvements in NM 18.0 • Simplified oplog in CHMI/NOP • Only showing the current route and the interesting routes • (more expensive routes not shown) • Only showing the criteria values (e.g. NM, Kg, minutes, …) • (corresponding EUROs values not shown anymore) • Easier input of a GRRT to be executed several times per day

  12. GRRT for Flight Efficiency opportunity: summary • Daily significant benefits (operational, environmental, …) reported by participating AOs • GRRT is a sophisticated/flexible/efficient tool • but it is complex • => we set it up for you ! • Contact us to discuss your wishes/specific needs/… • We prepare and activate your set of GRRTs • They run automatically everyday for your benefit • Less fuel, less delay, shorter flying time, … Questions ?
