  2. Why do we screen? • To determine vision defects that would affect learning Need for Spectacle Correction Need for Amblyopia therapy Need for referral for other eye diseases

  3. What are we looking for? GOAL OF VISION SCREENING: Detect Abnormal Vision Risk factors to visual development Timely treatment with greatest benefit Primary Goal – DETECTION OF AMBLYOPIA Secondary Goal – NEED FOR EYEGLASSES

  4. AMBLYOPIA Decreased vision in one eye relative to the other Congenital Cataract, Cornea disease Crossed eyes – strabismus Unequal refractive error – one strong & one Farsighted Detect early: Treat before age 6 Little benefit after age 8

  5. VISION CORRECTION • Effects of Poor Vision in the very young • Poor literacy • Behavioral Disorders • No participation in sports • Poor socialization • Others

  6. When should we screen?Where should we screen? • Lions should screen at any age from 6 months on • Biggest benefit: 6 months to 6 years of age • Day care centers/nursery schools • School screenings • Mall screenings
