  7. Long Term Causes • The Treaty of Versailles – crippled Germany’s economy and created bitterness • The Great Depression – created domestic issues in the Western powers. Extreme parties on the left and right offered extreme solutions to the economic problems (fascism and communism) • Failure of the League of Nations – aggressive nations defied the League time and time again (Italy, Germany and Japan)

Causes Continued • Alliances were formed: • Berlin, Rome, Tokyo Axis • Germany/Soviet Non- Aggression Pact • Anschluss (Germany and Austria) • Policy of Appeasement – because of the terror of World War 1 Britain wanted peace at all costs • Hitler’s aggressive policies – Denounce the Treaty of Versailles, Build his war machine, take back what is Germany’s and exterminate the Jewish Race • Japan’s quest for an Imperial Empire put her on a collision course with America

The point of No Return • March – The German Army invades what is left of Czechoslovakia after Hitler had taken the Sudetenland in 1938 • April 1939 – Spanish Civil War ends with Francisco Franco (Fascist) taking control. Testing ground for the new weapons of war • September 1st – Germany invades Poland to take back Danzig and the Polish Corridor • September 3rd – England and France declare war

  10. Blitzkrieg • Mobile War – Tanks, Planes and Mobile Infantry • Take out Bridges, power stations, telephone lines and supplies • Smash throw defenses with tanks and circle back to hit from behind (Pincers) • Mobile infantry takes the ground that has been left behind • Poland falls in 3 weeks
