  1. Predator/prey relationships Francisci: Science 7

  2. What is a population? • Population: All members of one species in a particular area • Examples: - 400 million prairie dogs live in a Texas town - Pigeonsthat live in NYC

  3. What is cooperation? • Cooperation: When organisms work together in a population for basic needs like food and shelter • Examples: - Wolves cooperate by hunting in packs to search for food - A bee pollinating a flower and the flower provides nectar for food

  4. What is competition? • Competition: An interaction that occurs when organisms try to survive by competing for the same resources. • Examples: Food, water, sunlight, living space

  5. More on Competition • The most successful competitors are those that are best adapted to their environment • Organisms with similar niches are likely to compete for resources • Example: Squirrels and chipmunks compete for acorns

  6. What is predation? • Predation: Relationship in which one animal hunts, kills and eats another animal • Predator: Organism that does the killing in a predation interaction • Prey: Organism that is killed and eaten by another organism

  7. Predator-Prey relationships maintain balance in an ecosystem.

  8. Effects of Predation on Population Size • Too many predators → decrease in the number of prey • Not enough prey → predator population decrease • Populations of predators and prey rise and fall in related cycles

  9. Predator Adaptations • Predators have adaptations that help them catch and kill their prey • Examples: - speed - release poison - hunt at night

  10. Prey Adaptations • Mimicry: Imitating another organism • Protective Covering • False Coloring (Scare away predators) • Camouflage • Release poison
