  2. What is a trend? Something that changes over time, becomes popular, then fades away. Something that follows a general course then takes on a new direction. • Clothes • Hair styles • Colors in decorating • Social conversation- Things you say. • Brand names Can you name any examples?

  3. Trend example: Transportation • Boat or Horse (Stagecoach) Then later people used • Train Then later people used • Car/Bus Then later people used • Airplane

  4. Trend example: Music Media • Records –45, 33, or 78 • 8-Track • Cassette • CD • MP3 & ITunes

  5. What jobs no longer exist or are very rare? • Lighthouse keepers • (Street) lamp lighter • Stagecoach drivers • Train conductor/Railroad workers • Clock setters and cleaners • Milkman

Trends in Education • Years ago, one teacher would teach many grades in a one-room school, students walked to school, and went home for lunch. • Later grades were split into different rooms with a teacher for each room, & transportation, food, and health care professionals provided. What jobs were created by this? Teachers, aides, counselors, school nurse, administrators, secretaries, architects, construction and maintenance workers, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, etc.

  7. Education Trend • Now classes can be taught via the Internet and video conference between schools. How does this change jobs? • Teachers must have technology training and someone has to set up the technology at schools. What jobs are created? IT/network technicians, computer technicians and programmers, Web and technical support specialists, etc.

Technology Trend in Jobs How are jobs changing due to technology? • People use faster means of travel to attend meetings OR • Stay at home or at their office and use videoconferencing, e-mail, chat, networking, podcasting, phone, and fax to communicate. What skills will you need to keep up with trends and find a job that is in demand?

Emerging Occupations • Emerging occupations can be characterized as new occupations created by changes in technology, society, markets, or regulations. • Emerging occupations may also be existing occupations that have been substantially modified by the same changes, and are increasing in employment.

This is the case with most jobs offering major opportunities and good pay.
