  1. Divers Watches –What makes them special?

  2. Divers Watches The functionality, design and technology that go into the construction of a divers’ watch are what contribute to the value of this genre of timepieces.

  3. Built for the Seas • Divers’ watches are specially designed to handle the extreme conditions of deep sea or scuba diving. These watches are engineered to be durable and reliable under the conditions of changing pressure, fluctuations in temperature and extreme stress, all while monitoring the divers’ dive time and other crucial parameters that are absolutely essential for a safe dive.

  4. In 1932, Omega SA created one of the first water-resistant pieces for commercial distribution. It was certified to be functional at a depth of 135m. • The 1953 Submariner by Rolex was one of the most important creation in the development and popularisation of this genre of watches. Made iconic by its choice as James Bond’s watch worn by Sean Connery in the 007 movies, it resulted in a number of subsequent designs taking inspiration from this particular model.

  5. The Science Involved • One of the innovative technologies that go into dive watches is the inclusion of expensive alloys for casing, like Titanium and 18-karat gold that are hard, durable and corrosive resistant materials used to protect the watch mechanisms. • Recent technologies include water pressure sensors, depth gauges and even specialised designs that work along with sensors attached to the chest of the diver to monitor heart rates.

  6. Other, more common technological features, include: • A unidirectional bezel with elapsed minute markings and a marker to specify the minute marking • Luminous dials and numerals to aid in visibility at lower diving depths • A luminous indicator to inform of proper functioning • Magnetic Resistance • Shock Resistance

  7. Contd.. • Chemical Resistance • A durable and tested strap, capable handling pressure at depths corresponding to the functionality of the watch. • An End-of-Life (EOL) indicator for those watches powered by batteries.

  8. Pieces of Art Some of the timepieces that are popular in the dive related genre: The gunmetal steel case, luminous bezel and durable rubber strapped Victorinox Swiss Army DiveMaster 500 which is a bargain for the technology and reliability it brings. The shock and magnetic resistant Bremont Supermarine 2000 as a time-keeping device when you decide to crawl through the abyss at an incredible depth of 2000m. And finally, the Girard – Perregaux Sea Hawk that is engineered with a self winding mechanical movement and functional at a depth of 1000 m.
