  3. What is Ethical & Social Responsibility all about? ‘The planet’s living systems are in decline and without them there is no such thing as society, let alone business. Businesses can continue to contribute to the decline or enter a new era of commerce where human and business needs don’t deplete living systems.’ Nike’s Corporate Responsibility Report FY01

  4. ‘The continuing commitment by entities to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families, as well as the local community and society at large.’ The World Business Council for Sustainable Development

  5. E&SR means rethinking how competitive advantage is created and sustained. • The fact is, selling poorly performing, unsafe, or environment damaging products is not a route to real competitive advantage in a world where environmental sensitivity and concern for social welfare are rising in all advanced nations.

  6. E&SR is all about businesses being aware of the impact that they have on the communities they operate in. CSR means deliberately maximising the positive and minimising the negative impact businesses may have. • It means a triple-bottom-line approach, the 3Ps being - profit, people, planet.

  7. There are some important points to make about leaders in E&SR. • They are often more profitable. One reason for this is that because they are ahead of regulatory changes, they are less concerned with compliance costs. • They have taken it seriously for some time and have multiple generations of audited sustainability reporting (a good key performance indicator). • They view sustainability has a core platform for all their business activities.

  8. Sustainability Indexes • Be aware that success in this area of business is measureable. • Australian Indexes • The Consumer Responsibility Index Website • http://www.corporate-responsibility.com.au/results/2007_results.asp • The Australian SAM Sustainability Index Website • http://www.aussi.net.au/
