  30. Why co-Teach?
  31. Increased options for all students. Reduced program fragmentation Reduced stigma Better adult support Both IDEA and NCLB make it imperative that students with disabilities, no matter what their current level of functioning, access the general curriculum to the maximum extent possible. Many professionals are concluding that the primary means of ensuring access is the collaborative model.
  32. When instruction is offered in a separate setting, it is often difficult if not impossible for a special educator to cover the content area in a way that adequately prepares the student. Even if special educators are approved as being highly qualified, the intent of the law to ensure that content is adequately addressed may not be met.
  33. What is the Model For Co-teaching?
  34. • The general education teacher is the expert in content, management, pacing, and what the typical student looks like. • The special educator’s content is the process of learning. In addition, they are experts in strategies, differentiation, accommodation, remediation, and the availability of services to level the playing field

  48. So, what do I take back to my school tomorrow?
  49. T.P.S.
  50. THAT PERSON SAID…
  51. There is NO EXCUSE for not having BOTH teachers’ names on both the report card and on the schedule. Make a policy statement that for NCLB purposes, the teacher listed first is the teacher of record. If they say there is only one space, then hyphenate the name.
  52. Give collaborative classes a separate number if you have to do so. There is NO EXCUSE for a special educator not to be able to access the same records as a general education teacher.
  53. There is NO EXCUSE not to get a substitute for a collaborative teacher. If you don’t get a sub, you are sending a message.
  54. There is NO EXCUSE not to find a way to provide some type of common planning for collaborative teams.
  55. The Strategies… One Teach One Assist Teaming Parallel Teaching Station Teaching Alternative Teaching Use Alternative Teaching to address the individual IEP goal in the classroom! (IDEA and RTI)
