  3. When you get your textbook… • In pen on the inside front cover write 10-(your student ID number). • Sign sheet with name and student ID number • Check your left and right hand neighbor to make sure they have done the same *This book can stay at home and you may use a class copy in class

  4. Hypothesis Card Game • Procedures: • Each pair or group of 3 will get two different decks of cards (red and blue). • You may discard any kings, queens or jokers; you will not need them. Jacks will equal 0, and aces 1. • Decide who will be the “SCIENTIST” and who will be “NATURE.” You will change roles as you play one hand as each role.

  5. Scientists and Nature’s Roles • “NATURE” obtain a “NATURE’S LAW” card from Ms. Lavelle. • Do NOT show the “SCIENTIST” the card and NEVER tell the “’SCIENTIST” what the “NATURE’S LAW” card says. Even after the game is over! • Be sure you understand the pattern before you start playing cards! The pattern on the card may have something to do with numbers, colors, odds or evens. • “SCIENTISTS” try to figure out the pattern by playing cards and then seeing how “NATURE” responds.

Playing the Game • “SCIENTIST” • Play any card from their deck. • HINT: Play your cards in an organized fashion so that the pattern will be easier to see. • “NATURE” • Play the first card that follows the “NATURE’S LAW.” • You may replay a card from the table if you run out of cards that fit the pattern. • If you cannot play a card that fits the law you should play a card face down to indicate “NO DATA.” • Remember, you are unfeeling and should not hint or help the “SCIENTIST” out, and never tells “NATURE’S LAW!” • Continue playing cards until the “SCIENTIST” feels they have discovered the pattern.

  7. Testing your theories • Scientists • When you think they have discovered a pattern, write an understandable, concise theory . • Test the theory by laying out three more cards and hypothesizing what “NATURE” will play • If the three hypotheses are correct, the “SCIENTIST” has a valid theory. If incorrect, continue playing cards until a new theory is discovered! • Nature • Remember nature never tells for sure. Tell the scientists whether their hypotheses are correct but not whether their theory is correct. Keep a poker face 

  8. Ending the Game Once a valid theory is established, “NATURE” should return the “NATURE’S LAW” card to the teacher without showing or telling the “SCIENTIST” what it says! The players should then switch roles.

  10. Reminders…. • Jacks equal 0, and aces equal 1. All other cards equal their face value. • Play the first card that follows the “NATURE’S LAW.” • You may replay a card from the table if you run out of cards that fit the pattern. • If you cannot play a card that fits the law you should play a card face down to indicate “NO DATA.” • Just like in science, Nature never tells!

Binder Set-Up • First Divider: “CATALYSTS” Objectives and assignment sections must be completed. • Second Divider: “NOTES” –Must have table of contents This is the onlyway that notes are graded and are a large part of the notebook grade, so be sure to keep up with your notes even when absent from class. notes assigned for homework, MUST be stamped! • Third Divider: “ASSIGNMENTS” -Must have table of contents Labs DO NOT go in this section. It will count as a Lab grade and remain in your Lab notebook. • Fourth Divider: “EXAMS and QUIZZES”- Must have table of contents
