  1. California Institute of Technology MRSECH.A. Atwater DMR-0080065Education and Outreach: Material World: The Properties of Matter Material World: The Properties of Matter Produced by the NSF Center for the Science and Engineering of Materials (CSEM) at Caltech and Summer Productions Aligning with the Glenn Commission, CSEM made a strategic commitment to raise the awareness of and to increase interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics amongst young people and adults. Material World identifies the contemporary media of Television and the Internet as the best ‘instrument for change’ in the classroom with a television series that helps inspire young viewers to see scientific careers in a new appealing light. Caltech’s CSEM advisory group identified Materials Science as an under-served field that can drive the creation of fascinating programming that entertains, informs, and changes lives. The Pilot episode of Material World (completion in May 2005) tells compelling stories about amazing new materials, their properties and applications. Each segment explains how our understanding of physical and chemical properties continues to evolve.
