  1. Chapter 12 Motivation & Emotion • Quiz

  2. Card Houses • Half the class will run around the building, twice. • The other half will meditate in the classroom silently (if you can’t meditate you will reflect inwardly on your day)

  3. Each person in the partnership will take turns making a house of cards. The object is to make a house with the most number of stories that is standing at the end of a two minute period. The person who ran outside will go first.

  4. WINNERS! • There is a sheet being passed around for the winners of the card house game to put their names on. • The winner from each pair gets 5 points of extra credit. • The losers get nothing.

  5. Need to Achieve • Who won? • How do you feel about winning or losing? • What does this say about your need to achieve? • I’m not really giving an extra points

  6. Cultural Motivation • Imagine you are the head of RCC’s recycling program. There are 5 people in the program you need to get going on a project. One is a 40 year old Indian man, another is a 25 year old white single woman, another is a 32 year old single Hispanic father, and the last person is a 22 year old married Japanese woman. How would you get all these people motivated to work on your project?

  7. Hunger-Eating • Hunger: biological causes • Hypothalamus, blood sugar, liver. • Lateral hypothalamus, ventromedial hypothalamus, glucagon like peptide 1 all cause us to eat more (or not stop eating) • Psychological causes: • Stress, cultural values about weight, sports, BMI

  9. Learned Motives, Pursuit of Excellence • Opponent Process theory: if a stimulus causes a strong emotion, the opposite emotion will occur when the stimulus ends • Social or Learned motives come from a variety of sources • Need for Achievement (nAch) • Card House Activity

  10. Physiology of Emotion • Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) • Sympathetic branch: activates body for emergency • Parasympathetic branch: reverses emotional arousal, returns • functioning • to baseline

Motivational Cycle Motivation initiates, sustains and directs the behavior of an organism Homeostasis: attempt at equilibrium All behavior has a purpose, it is goal directed Need: a lack of something necessary Drive: urge to satisfy the need Behavior: identification and completion of goal Goal: Reduces or satisfies the need
